Pre-sales sales rank? What?

How can a book have an Amazon sales rank if pre-orders aren't supposed to affect sales rank? Or is that only for the NYT?

If Amazon does track and include pre-sales, then what's a good range to be in if a book is 6-months out, prior to publication?

(Yes, I know Amazon rankings fluctuate. I didn't go looking for one - I went looking for my cover, and I was surprised to see a ranking there.)

They guess?

I think authors need an Amazon account option to block out the rankings on their books unless requested. Some do check them frequently, and that way madness can lie.

Of course, once you've checked to make sure everything looks good, you're there to check your ranking or your reviews, potential madness either way.
