Tomorrow, I begin my new full-time job as a tech support specialist with a door and window hardware company in southern California. According to the HR supervisor, their tech support department lost one technician to a promotion and another was let go for "performance issues". With the mad rush to convert their Windows XP PCs to Windows 7, there will be plenty of overtime and 6-day work weeks.

Of course, it also didn't hurt that one of the guys who interviewed me is a Mac fan who supports Windows users for a living (just like I did in my last job), and that the Chief Information Officer is about my age.

Thanks for being here when I needed to unload, and I'll keep everyone posted on how things go.

Thanks, everyone, and if anyone else is in a similar situation (over 50 unemployed gray-haired geek), now's the time to strike.

The Windows XP-to-7 frenzy is underway, and companies will be looking for reliable, experienced techs, having discovered that cocky young certified techs aren't always the most punctual and stable.

Great news, Joe! My husband is also a 50+ guy in Desktop Support, and the last few years have been a long string of short-term contracts with no feeling of security under our feet. I only thank goodness my job has been relatively safe over the last couple decades.
