I'm not quite sure if the novel I'm writing can be classified as a 'romance'. It certainly has a very romantic plot, however, it does not end happily and it contains other sub-plots that are not at all related to romance. I'm not sure how to classify it, any suggestions?

If the two main characters don't end up together at the end, then its not romance. If they do and there is a major romantic theme, then probably.

It sounds like it may fall under the larger umbrella of "women's fiction". I believe Amazon has a classification for WF in it's subjects available to browse. You might try looking over some of the books listed there and see if you think your book fits with them.
