View Full Version : Follow up protocol; a few questions

In the absence of anything definitive in their guidelines, how long should I wait to follow up with an agent who requested a partial of my manuscript?
And what is the most appropriate way to follow up?

The last time three times I waited several months after not hearing from an agent, the day after I inquired about what was going on, I got rejected. I took that to mean the agent hadn't looked at my material until I pestered them, and then they were so annoyed that I got in touch, that they didn't want to have anything to do with me. But I could be wrong. On the other hand, I'd rather have a no than no answer.

Further, on the no answer issue, how likely is it that an agent who requested a partial would just simply never respond after that?

Popmuse, wait it out. However long it takes, unless the next ice age begins to set in. Those who don't pester usually get a fair read. I've heard that if you force your hand sometimes an immediate rejection is forth coming because the agent has been caught napping and is embarassed. It happened to me once.

Just hang in there and start on your next project. Don't be afraid to bomb several agents at once. Irons in the fire.
