Just a fun survey. List 10 interesting or useful things to be found in or on your writing desk (or other surface).

Here's mine (I have one of those antique cabinet desks with a million cubby holes and drawers):

1. mini container of blue play-doh
2. yellowed paperback dictionary/thesaurus
3. a 1903 edition of "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" (that I've never read)
4. 9 mini-notebooks, only one of which is currently in use
5. a set of colored pencils
6. a collection of fortune cookie fortunes (that I liked)
7. a stack of bookmarks that I will use someday
8. 1 pencil and 1 pen
9. a lone paperclip
10. an unopened stack of index cards that I've had for years

I don't have a desk. My laptop sits with me on my bed.

On my bed are normal things that go on a bed, plus a shirt wadded up in the corner there that says "Steak 'n' Bitches (eatery/bordello/registered charity)".

Well .... my main computer is on a simple desk. There's just the:

  1. monitor
  2. mouse
  3. keyboard
  4. stapler
  5. box of kleenex
  6. tiered file holder filled with manilla folders for each client
  7. a desk calendar book
Now, where my laptop is, where I do my writing ... it's on a small square table that used to be the kitchen table. On it is:

  1. The laptop
  2. mouse
  3. a file cubby that actually belongs to something else ... and it's filled with internet marketing books, books concerning murder mysteries and police procedurals for writers, 5x7 note cards to help me with my murder mystery novel, and a spiral notebook

Let's see

1. Several volumes of assorted manga (my bookshelf is full)
2. Three separate sketch books (I'm also an avid drawer)
3. A few spirals here and there.
4. Stacks of various school notes.
5. Two unopened packages of pens.
6. Some crumpled up sheets of random garbled mesh that I wrote last month.
7. An (awesome) Scott Pilgrim action figure.
8. A sketch of a Creepy Sniffing Thing (don't ask) that a friend drew for me.
9. A mechanical pencil with no lead.
10. A stack of books for learning Japanese that I have yet to dive into.

I think that about sums it up.

I have a laptop. It sits on my lap because I'm pretty sure desks are scared of my pack rat ways. So..as I sit in my recliner, I have

laptop
phone
a pair of headphones
a kindle
a 3-g hotspot

Man I'm boring. My desk had way cooler stuff...until it broke. :(

Oh my gosh, my desk is a nightmare...

There are probably about 30 things on my desk, if not more, but I will stick to ten. ;)

1. Four mini pom-pom cupcakes with felt icing and sprinkles. One of them even has a cherry with a brown pipecleaner for the stem. Made 'em myself. ^_^
2. A stuffed monkey wearing a bandit mask. My husband won it for me at a fair.
3. A small decorative loaf of bread that looks like a turtle. Tiny raisins for the eyes...
3. An eraser the size of my hand that says "For BIG Mistakes"
4. A notepad with an incorrect email address on the current page and...well, notes.
5. My bag of DND dice.
6. Lots of pens and pencils, most of which are contained in a clay cup that was crafted by one of my aunt's fellow art class students.
7. A sadly empty ice cream bowl.
8. Three broken video cards.
9. The Mistborn Trilogy box set.
10. A picture of my senior year tap class.

As you can see, I keep all of my important things close by.

Reading this thread I realize I've been neglecting my desk. In comparison to all of the above, mine is pretty barren. It has:

1. The laptop
2. A hookah (an Arab smoking device)
3. An empty coffee mug
4. And another one
5. And another
6. A fruit milk-shake

Guess you can tell I'm in the middle of a writing spree, huh? :)

I mostly write in cafes and libraries, so I rarely have 10 things on my desk. Right now I have my laptop and a cup of coffee. :) Oh, yeah, I am writing... ;) (Soon, I promise, I'll just take a look at this one thread...)

When we bought the house, this old wooden desk had been left by the previous owners in one corner of the garage. It looked like barn siding and took me many hours to sand and stain back to life...and still needs one drawer handle. =)

An enameled pendant my cousin made me when I was 10
pack of sewing needles
blue 'ball' jar half full of marbles
pretty box with my old rings
a Breyer's horse I've had forever

Copies of the DSM II, III, and IV
Digital voice recorder
a dead electronic cigarette
Glow in the dark toy figure of Ghost Rider (joke from a friend)
a dime

6) A booklet from Sam McCauley outlining all the marvellous things they can do with your photographs (including putting it on a tshirt worn by a small, beige bear, for a mere €14.99).
7) Various cables which accompanied my new modem but which I apparently don't need as they're on my desk, still in their bags.
8) A Very Important Piece of Paper listing the price comparisons of duvets bought from Marks and Spencer dot com vs Marks and Spencer dot ie.
9) A set of Matryoshka featuring Russian leaders from Tsar Nicolas to Boris Yeltsin.

3. Digital camera
4. Backup hard drive (external)
5. Wallet
6. Coffee mug

8. A couple of clean napkins--didn't chuck 'em after dinner last night 'cause they're still good
9. Voter-registration card (early voting in Texas last week)
10. Diamond stone for sharpening my folding knife

My laptop moves around a lot, since I don't have a real desk, but here's what's hanging around my current writing spot:

1. digital camera
2. a new memory card reader since I lost the cord to the digital camera
3. an in-progress cross-stitch that will eventually say "Bienvenue" (I only have the "ve" and one of the bordering flowers done so far)
4. one of my puppy's squeaky toys
5. a box of Wheaties I still haven't put away from breakfast
6. my boots so the puppy won't eat them
7. a tiger mug full of pens
8. a green dish towel
9. a giant plastic bag full of probably 200 sheet protectors (a gift from another teacher on the last day of school)
10. my cell phone

I live in a little RV, and my desk is my dinette table (and can become a bed, but it never does). There are two cupholders that I use for tiny stuff that I don't want to fly around when I drive, and I'll describe ten things in them because the laptop is the only thing on the desk.

1. A wadded up kleenex. (eww, throwing that out now)
2. My thumb drive that I back up writing onto
3. A role of quarters
4. A metal fold-over pin from John Day Fossil Beds with a saber tooth nimravid skull printed on it
5. A bottle of gel superglue
6. A straightened paperclip for getting my CD/DVD player open when it won't open normally
7. The strike plate for my bathroom door that I really should get around to putting up there a year after I replaced the knob.
8. LED thermometer with time/date readout
9. A rusty mystery screw (will not throw out, just in case)
10. A wall anchor leftover from putting up the hook for my solar shower

I'm surprised so many have desks! I don't. Right now, I'm sitting on a screened in porch overlooking the Potomac on all sides. My laptop is on my lap, coffee is on the ledge beside me, and my WIP is open. That's it.

to get to the essence, one must simplify. You out of the box thinker, you.
