My son, who is fascinated with languages and wants to move to Denmark (land of his heritage; my parents came from there) has been bringing home foreign-language movies from the local library. Many of these have been extremely good, and I've come to realize that subtitles are far better than dubbing, but that's a digression.

Tonight we watched Karakter, based on a 1938 Dutch novel by Ferdinand Bordewijk, which is regarded as a major classic of 20th Century Dutch fiction. After watching it, I learned that it won the 1998 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and I would opine that award was richly deserved.

Just spherically fabulous, fabulous any way you look at it. A dark, taut, atmospheric drama set in the 1920s. The novel, I have now learned, is available in English translation under the transliterated title Character. I'm going to obtain a copy at the earliest opportunity.

Recommend at the highest level, and I'd be interested in hearing comments from anyone else who has seen it.
