How did you decide to leave your "day job" or career to write full time? Were you published first?

I'd love for writing to be a full time career. I doubt I'll ever be able to quit my day job, though. I certainly won't do so unless I've already made at least two years' pay in advance from writing. Bills have to be paid and a gal needs health insurance.
So, I don't realistically expect this to happen. Unless I win the lottery or marry someone who can afford to pay the bills without my assistance for awhile.
