Let's get this a bit more organized, shall we? I did a little sprucing up before, but it got lost in the second crash. Here we go...

Some of these have markets and places to record response times. Very, very useful!

The People's Friend
THE PEOPLE’S FRIEND
D.C.Thomson’s stable of Scottish magazines THE PEOPLE’S FRIEND publishes up to 7 stories a week and has seasonal fiction editions.
Read several copies of the magazine first. Send an s.a.e. for the excellent guidelines and follow them to the letter. This magazine - founded in 1869 - has been a success for years because the editors know what their readers like in the way of fiction. They are looking for ‘a good read for practical women-and men.’ The readers, aged 30 to over 80 enjoy traditional stories, and articles on home interests, especially cooking and knitting. Stories should have romantic or emotional appeal without sex, violence or drugs. As one editor puts it: ‘...the most important people are our readers. What matters to them is that they can rely on good clean reading of the sort they prefer in "their" magazine every week. If a writer is prepared to study the market and provide same, consistently, accepting guidance from our editor, who certainly knows the market, she or he will sell to us.’
Short stories are from 1,000 to 4,000 words. Serials of 60,000-70,000 words must be queried and contracted first. Unsolicited short stories, poems, articles and children’s material must be submitted by post and please include an s.a.e for response.
Response can be slow. The magazine receives hundreds of submissions. Include your e-mail details so if your story shows promise but needs a rewrite the editors can contact you quickly.
Payment is always on acceptance

My first editorial call for submissions

I have accepted a position as fiction editor for Andwerve Literary Magazine--I'd love to find some short fiction pieces from AW members among the first in my submission file.

Check out this month's issue to get a feel for what they are looking for--several of the poems where written by AW members, and an AW member also contributed artwork to April's issue. http://www.andwerve.com/]

Andwerve has recently made a transition from a print format to an on-line format. Until they establish a new domain, I can accept short fiction manuscripts (under 1000 words) at [email protected]

I have a question. Can you please tell me

what is

I notice it on most U.K. short story guidelines:

Is it self addressed envelope .....without postage?

Thanks again....much appreciated.:D

It is a challenge, isn't it?

Here you are, Josie,

If you are having problems buying IRCs (Internationsl Reply Coupons) or don't like the huge price charged for them then you can buy stamps for these countries at these websites:

U.K. The Royal Mail: www.royalmail.com (Sheets of 100 1st class for £32 +p.)
USA. The US Postal Service: www.usps.com (20 airmail stamps for $9.60)
N.Z. New Zealand Post: www.nzpost.co.nz (prepaid envelopes or stamps)
O.Z. Australia Post: www.auspost.com.au (prepaid envelopes or stamps)

Please add to the list.

Thanks, PDR for the info on postage.

I'm sure we have International Reply Coupons here, and if we do I'll get the website address to add on to the list for Canada.
All your help is wonderful and greatly appreciated.

Oddly enough I did received the My Weekly and Friends guidelines in the snailmail today. I had sent a self-addressed envelope to them without postage and they were good enough to send me the info requested anyway.

Dummy me thought s.a.e. was self addressed envelope rather than
stamped addressed envelope.

Every country has their different acronyms :D

Cheers:hi:

most "prestigious" literary magazines on-line?

There are TONS of on-line literary journals out there. Does anyone know WHICH ones are considered prestigious by most book agents and publishers? I'm thinking spefically or general or literary fiction (not genre). I would like to compile a list of these for future submissions. I have started with the ones that are listed in the Million Writers Award Notable Stories of 2005 at http://www.storysouth.com/millionwriters/2005notablestories.html but would be interested in hearing about more.

I just posted information in the "Magazine Mastheads" section about American Scholar. This is the quarterly journal of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and it publishes short fiction, along with essays, criticism and poetry.

The autumn issue has two stories:
"The Preacher's Wife" by Dennis McFarland
"The Dome" by Steven Millhauser

In another world, of course
I'm pulling my hair out--I can't seem to find any good romance paying markets out there.

I'm shocked that half of the reading material in America is romance. :p

The only GOOD paying market I know of right now is Woman's World magazine--a weekly glossy magazine. But I would love to know if there are any other weekly/monthly magazines that take short romance. Here are the guidelines:

Romantic Short Stories

We buy contemporary romances of 1,100 words. Stories must revovle around a compelling, true-to-life relationship dilemma; may feature either a female or male protagonist; and may be written in either the first or third person. Characters may be married, single, divorced, or widowed; should be down-to-earth (no yuppies or jet-setters); and their dilemma should be poignantly or humorously conveyed. Please think carefully about a story's setting, mood and plot, and tell the story with interesting action and dialogue. (Every sentence, paragraph, and scene of the story should deliver more information about your characters and thei situation and/or briskly advance the storyline.)

We are not interested in stories involving life-or-death matters, nor are we interested in fluffy, flyaway-style romances. When we say romance, what we really mean is relationship--whether it's just beginning or is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The emphasis in our stories is on real life--which is why we do not buy science fiction, fantasy or historical.

We pay $1,000 per romance and retain First North American Serial Rights for six months after publication.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Manuscripts should be double spaced in legible size type.

Where to send manuscripts: Fiction Editor, Woman's World, 270 Sylvan Ave., Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632.

How to send manuscripts: (1) You must include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope to receive a reply. Manuscripts not accompanies by a SASE will be discarded. Note: A #10 SASE is necessary not just for a response, but for your contract if we purchase your story. (2) Please DO NOT fax or email manuscripts--because such submissions do not include SASEs, we have no means of responding to your submission.

Get to know us: Please familiarize yourself thoroughly with our style before submitting your work.

Be patient: Because we receive a tremendous volume of manuscripts, our turnaround time may range from one to six months. If you still have not heard from us after that time, feel free to re-submit your manuscript. Please do not call or write us to inquire about the manuscript's status.

*************
(YES, you read that right-- $1,000 for 1,100 words! Get those short romances in order and send 'em out! :D )

Yes, this is a great journal. But when they started publishing fiction, I noticed this editorial note:

"One practical reason for not running fiction [in the past] did eventually come to mind. How would our small staff handle the onslaught of creative-writing-program-generated manuscripts sure to follow the publication of our first short story? We struggle to keep up with the unsolicited nonfiction manuscripts. A doubling or tripling of submissions might result in editorial defenestration--either these manuscripts learn to fly or we do.

The SCHOLAR has always encouraged young talent [....] Still, we have reluctantly decided to discourage the submission of unsolicited fiction. Send those stories someplace else, please. We promise to find you when your talent has blossomed."

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, especially today! (Has anyone heard any updates/changes to this policy?)

Best,
Erika D.

Free Fiction Market Guide

Hi, all:

Here's a holiday gift (I hope you see it that way, anyway! I debated about posting this, wondering if it teetered too much into self-promotion territory, but the topic is directly relevant to the thread, and the resource is free.)

Earlier this year (2006) I made my Directory of Paying Short Story Markets complimentary. I did that because when I discovered Duotrope.com (which has been referenced earlier in this thread) I realized there was really no need for me to keep updating this guide (let alone charge people for it). Duotrope is wonderful!

Still, there are at least a few markets in that guide that you may not find at Duotrope (or elsewhere). So please check it out and download your copy if you wish.

Best,
Erika D.
