I wrote this poem a little over 10 years ago while I was doing the starving actor thing out in LA. My location and occupation may have changed, but it holds true none-the-less. It's a day late, I know, but all things considered, that just makes it all the more appropriate
Here's wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season.
Doing Nothing
It’s sort of my own little season’s tradition,
Choosing some words and making them rhyme.
But one word has ruled this holiday season,
BUSINESS!
I just haven’t had time
To delve deep into causes and reasons and meanings
I’ve touched on before, in Christmas’ past,
As a casual observer of the habits and leanings
Of the world as I know it.
This world’s just too fast,
And sometimes it’s hard to keep pace.
Like a gold medal sprinter in a long distance race,
I tend to get winded, just can’t get my air
So I slow.
Then I stop.
And I sit.
Resting there.
And I sit and I think of all that’s been done.
Then I sit and I think of the race to be run.
(Or is it a race? And can it be won?)
(While it is work, can it also be fun?)
I’ll make it a game!
Then as each morning passes and turns into day
I’ll enjoy each new moment.
And I might like LA!
So here’s to just slowing and stopping and sitting.
Whether thinking or resting or reading or knitting.
We all need to cool it and coast for a while,
Take all that we’re doing and put it on file
Till we gather our thoughts and can honestly say,
“NOW I am ready for another work day!
Bring on the business, I’ll tear it apart!
‘Cause I’m ready and rested and I’ve regained my heart!”
It took doing nothing to make it all right,
So Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good night!
