So I'm planning to kill some (fictional) dudes, and the way this particular deed is done is through a disposable cell phone acting as a detonator.
Now, the recovery of the phone among the wreckage of the incident is what I call a "soft" clue (the characters recognise that it's unlikely any of the people in the crash would use one, so they suspect it might've been used as a detonator).
The first question is: Is it feasible for such a phone's SIM card to survive the detonation? We're not talking a high powered explosive either--the bomb in question is attached to an already weakened cable, and is there to give said cable a nudge in the right direciton, as it were.
The second question is: If it is feasible, is it possible to recover partial data from a damaged SIM card?
Basically, if they get nothing from the SIM card because it was obliterated, the clue is useless. They already suspect something is up, and the phone wouldn't turn up any leads. What I want to do is have them recover a partial phone number, which they can use to narrow down the search. Also a convenient way for me to set up a red herring.
So, is such a scenario possible? If so, is it so glaringly implausible that it leans on your suspension of disbelief?
ETA: Not to doubt the capabilities of whomever responds, but either a source or some credentials would be appreciated.
