View Full Version : Question for debut fiction authors - platform?

Hi everyone,

I was unsure where to post my question, so I hope posted it in the right forum.

For debut fiction authors who have been signed by agents since past year, did you mention anything about platform in your query letters? Was it one of the main reasons your agent offered to represent you?

Platform is mainly for non-fiction, not novels. Having a following won't hurt, of course, but it's not a necessity. And no, it had nothing to do with getting an agent.

Platform is great for fiction if you're already a media personality with a national or international following (television, movies, magazines, etc.) But for any other field of employment, it really doesn't matter.

Good to know, thank you for your answers!

No, I have no platform to speak of, so I didn't mention it. The thing that helped get my agent's attention was the request for full from a publisher he already dealt with :)

I have another question: did any of you already have a blog with many followers before you got an agent?

Had never heard of a blog and didn't have a website. It's all about the book. Write a great book first. Platform will follow. :)

No blog at all. Only a freebie website, which I doubt my agent read. It was all about the story.

Small-time blog with around 200 followers.
