Scooched.

As in, "She scooched over on the sofa." How is that not a word? It is the word I want to use! It is the *only* word that will work!

*dramatic wail*

Grrrrrrrrr

Heh when I type scootched, it changes it to scotched, which is a completely different meaning. :D (And kind of a scary word)

Yes of course, scooted would be an option, but scooched is the only word that will work perfectly! *throws body on floor and flings arms and legs*

Scooched is absolutely positively a word. No doubt. Spell checker hates the really awesome words. It must be jealous.

Spellcheck: (silence) *red line*

Me: Go $^@^ yourself!

Spellcheck: (silence)

Scooched isn't in my dictionary (Collins English Dictionary, Complete & Unabridged, 7th Ed, 2005). Of course, that doesn't prove that it's not a valid word, but it's a reasonably large dictionary. Unless scooched has made it in since 2005.

It has scooted. Not scootched.

Scoot or scooted is a perfectly wonderful word. I do not want the word to feel slighted. However, in my mind scooted, and scootched, (or scooched) convey different measurements. When some ones scooteds it is like a half a foot or more. When someone scootched (scooched) it is less than that. Like an inch. Or centimeter.

I use a lot of foreign names and words in my novel, so I'm always adding words to my dictionary or else I will have red squiggly lines everywhere.

In the Castle, of course.
There are many legitimate words the spell checker doesn't like. When I find one that it gives me fits over, I just add it.

Remember, whoever programmed the spell checker was playing to the lowest common denominator. You are a writer. Do not be limited by such low expectations. ;)

Skooch is a word:

cooch/sko͞oCH/
Verb:
Crouch or squat.
Move in or pass through a restricted space: "waiters kept trying to scooch by."

However, scooch is not.

Ever read Jack London? He made up words all the time. His novels had footnotes with the meaning of the word after saying he made them up.

However, if I read someone scooched on the sofa, I would say, "huh?"

I vote for scoot. ;)
