If I rode my bike across England, could I sleep on your floor along the way?

I'm plotting a Glorious Yet Cheap vacation in England for this summer (well pre- or post-Olympics for sure). I have to talk my sweetie into it too :D

But I'd like to go from Derby, through Birmingham down to Oxford, then along the Thames valley through London, past the Thames Barrier and all the way out to Canterbury and Dover. 360 miles--not too bad to do 50 miles a day, plus a few days to laze around with friends. Hitting tourist spots via train and bus like we did last year was not really satisfying my desire to explore.

Anybody live near those places and might like to put up charming bicycle guests for a night? :D Have any clever advice for a long bike trip through England (besides stay on the left side of the road)?

I could not afford the airfare to get my floor or couch to England.

I lived about 15 miles outside Birmingham, along the A38 between Birmingham and Derby, and i would have happily put you up as i am a biker also. Unfortunately, just before christmas, i moved to Mallorca, Sorry.

I'm in Norfolk and I have a guest room. Plenty of room for bikes.

If you are going from Birmingham down to Oxford will you be popping into Stratford-upon-Avon?

I have family in Derby. I'll send them an email, telling them to expect a kitty on a bicycle near the Olympics.

;)

Cheers! I may have to take you up on that :D

Milton Keynes any use to you?

I think we will be passing south through Banbury, so that would be a wee bit out of the way. But perhaps it would be an interesting detour! I will keep it in mind, thanks! I don't know anything about Milton Keynes but I think once in a book Terry Pratchett said it was made by Satan? I do want to take a nerdy tourism outing to Bletchley Park tho.

Thanks, I will keep it in mind! I think Norfolk is well out of the way tho. I was in the Midlands last spring and we spent a day exploring Stratford-upon-Avon as our friend worked for the RSC Theater for a long time. I liked it so much I wanted to write a book set there :D

I dunno. Are you a murderer? I am a bit leery of murderers. (I'm in London, by the way.)

I can't even murder a fictional character! That's why I write MG novels :D Cheers. We have a lot of friends in London, and at least one with enough spare floor space to park two exhausted plump cyclists :D

Bugger, we're south of Oxford, just west of the Berkshire border in Wiltshire, not far from the Ridgeway, White Horse hill, etc. Unfortunately, we don't even have much floor. :(

Milton Keynes is actually quite a nice place to live, but you probably wouldn't want to visit.
Also, it occurred to me after I posted that there'd be two of you, both with bikes - my little flat might not manage anyway. I already keep my own bike in the living room!
Do you know, I've lived in this area for more than two thirds of my life, and I've never been to Bletchley Park. I really have to do that some time.

You can stay at some of the colleges of Oxford for not much money. Queens College was where I stayed once, even though it was a bit of a walk in the morning to my college (and after the pubs!).

Very historical, and the guards are super helpful and sweet.

I know it's not quite the same, but you can definitely have bicycles.

There she was just a-ridin' down the street, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
Ringin her bell and peddlin' her feet, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
She looked good (looked good), she rode fine (rode fine)
She looked good, she rode fine and it was nearly nighttime

Before I knew it she was ridin' next to me, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
Ridin' her cycle just as natural as can be, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
She rode on (rode on) to my door (my door)
She rode on to my door, then she slept upon my floor

Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, we'll sing it
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, oh yeah, oh, oh yeah
Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do

If anyone comes round our village singing 'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do' they'll get the dogs set on them.

We're in Folkestone, so could potentially be of use for your Canters/Dover visit, but the other half gave me a look when I suggested it to him, so I'll have to get back to you!

How are you with sofa beds, no central heating and needy cats?

I've been told that Bletchley Park is an awesome place to visit - really well presented and an awful lot to see. I pass it when I go to stay with a friend near Oxford - I so want to go there!

Kitty, I think you need to reroute your vacation.

Bettie lives in the enchanted forest known as Cal-i-forn-ia. I live just north of Portland, OR and Kevin lives somewhere in Canadialand. It's more than 360 miles, but I have a brother-in-law who does two or three hundred mile rides on a whim. I can probably recruit him to push you an additional hundred or so miles a day.

Think about it. It's a win/win/win/win. You'll get your vacation, Betty will get to be useful, Kevin will save all that shipping on his couch and my dog will have someone to chase around the yard.

Whadayasay?
