View Full Version : January 2012 Flash Fiction Challenge!

01-11-2012, 07:09 PM
Welcome to the January Flash Fortnight!

The January Flash Fortnight (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213125) will run from Sunday 15th January (Day 1) to Saturday 28th January (Day 14). Each morning during the challenge, I'll update this post with a new prompt for the day, so please check back if you find them useful! All of the challenge prompts will remain permanently available to you, so if you'd like to use any of them outside of the Fortnight, please feel free to do so.

Day 14 : Beachcomber.
Day 13 : Echoes.
Day 12 : A roadie for an unusual band.
Day 11 : An abandoned quarry.
Day 10 : A new word.
Day 9 : Agent provocateur.
Day 8 : Arrivals.
Day 7 : Labyrinths and breadcrumbs.
Day 6 : Sand.
Day 5 : Fire season.
Day 4 : Blackout.
Day 3 : A new bridge.

Day 2 : The feeding and care of your new alien.
Day 1 : Night duty.

Tips on using the prompts

Think of the prompt as a starting point. When you look at it, certain words, phrases or ideas might immediately come to your mind. Try writing these down. For each of these things, consider what words, phrases or ideas that they, in turn, inspire.

Keep going in this way. You could free associate on the thoughts you're getting, or ask yourself questions on each thing: What is it about this that I'm drawn to? What would happen if I followed this train of thought to its logical conclusion?

Try not to censor yourself, or second-guess your imagination. In the end, the idea you end up with might be completely unrelated to the prompt - and that's completely fine!

Good luck!

Ooh, ooh! *reserves a seat*

01-13-2012, 08:26 AM
Ooohh, this sounds fun.

01-14-2012, 02:25 PM
Sophia, could i make a tiny suggestion? (though you can ignore me completely if you don't agree; i won't be upset :))

Do you think you might be able to, as well as updating the OP with each prompt, let us know each prompt in a new post in the thread? Last year, i found i'd get busy with things and forget the prompts had been updated. Doesn't mean i can't write based on the prompts later, of course, but this year i'd love to give each prompt a try on the day they're posted.

Like i said, feel free to ignore me :)

No worries; I'll make it so. :)

Can you explain this some more, Sophia, please? You mean there are prompts to give us ideas but we don't have to use them? Is the idea mainly to just come up with 14 stories in 14 days?

01-15-2012, 12:57 AM
Sea Witch: The challenge is described more fully in the Flash Fortnight sticky (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213125), but that's essentially it, yes!

Oh, wow, love the sound of this. It reminds me of a month long flash fic challenge on deviantArt I participated in last summer - it was fun but I had the most difficult time keeping up! (31 fics in 31 days... need more stamina... D: )

A fortnight, however, sounds manageable. Count me in!

01-15-2012, 05:28 AM
I'll give it a shot. :)

Okay, I'm in. :Coffee:

01-15-2012, 06:24 AM
I'm in. I should be writing more than I am anyhow.

01-15-2012, 06:31 AM
I'm in

01-15-2012, 02:27 PM
Welcome, everyone, and good luck!

Day 1 prompt:

Night duty

I did my first one last night. So I didn't use the prompt--sorry. I already subbed it, already got a first rejection  and already sent it out again. 450 words. SF which I've never done in my life. I'm learning A) the more subs you have floating around, the less you have emotionally invested in each one and B) after the first rejection (ever) the following ones don't hurt so much. At some point, you have to just hold you head up and feel like: who was it that said something like "they just don't understand my genius." Bradbury? :D

01-16-2012, 12:52 PM
Well, this is going to turn out longer than flash. How much longer, i'm not sure.

ETA: 2150, as it turns out. :)

01-16-2012, 02:02 PM
What a great start, Sea Witch and Izz!

Day 2 prompt:

The feeding and care of your new alien.

01-16-2012, 04:25 PM
For the record, I did the first prompt yesterday. What I wrote felt more like a snippet of a longer piece than a complete flash fiction, but oh well. And I'll be working on the day 2 prompt this evening.

01-16-2012, 11:27 PM
Go Sarona! :snoopy:

01-17-2012, 01:17 PM
Wee! Two down!

(this one came to 1350 words, but i know how to cut it down if need be :))

01-17-2012, 02:09 PM
Go, Izz and Sarona! :)

Day 3 prompt:

A new bridge.

01-18-2012, 12:57 PM
Day 4 prompt :

01-19-2012, 09:48 AM
Well, i've got a start for 'A new bridge' and haven't had a chance to try 'Blackout' yet. So much writing and editing to do, not nearly enough time!

01-19-2012, 12:56 PM
Day 5 prompt:

Fire season.

01-20-2012, 01:50 PM
I've got four completed stories now, but only one of them is flash. I have a start on a fifth (A new bridge) but i think that'll be over flash length, too.

Maybe i can get them down after edits? Heh--or, knowing me, i'll add more words.

Anyway, having great fun so far, Sophia. Thanks! :)

01-20-2012, 02:57 PM
Great going, Izz. :)

Day 6 prompt:

01-21-2012, 02:22 PM
Day 7 prompt:

Labyrinths and breadcrumbs.

01-22-2012, 03:04 PM
Day 8 prompt:

A bit late to the party, but I just wrote a 668-word piece for "Night duty."

01-23-2012, 08:16 AM
:hooray: Nicely done!

01-23-2012, 11:42 AM
Go, you, Taylor V!

Day 9 prompt:

Agent provocateur.

I'm a bit late to the party too but the day 1 prompt "Night Duty" really helped. I had written a paragraph months back, didn't know where to go next so dumped it in a folder. Saw the prompt and immediately knew how to complete the story...wrote a 914 word flash

01-23-2012, 11:12 PM
Nice one, GCU! :)

01-24-2012, 03:47 PM
Woo hoo, GCU! I'm really glad to hear that. :)

Day 10 prompt:

A new word.

01-25-2012, 04:40 PM
Day 11 prompt:

An abandoned quarry.

01-26-2012, 12:11 PM
Day 12 prompt:

A roadie for an unusual band.

01-27-2012, 04:15 PM
Day 13 prompt:

01-28-2012, 02:04 PM
Day 14 prompt:

01-28-2012, 10:21 PM
Great set of prompts, Sophia. Thanks for the challenge, it's been heaps of fun :) Looking forward to next month!

01-29-2012, 04:13 PM
Thanks, Izz. :) Well done to everyone who gave the challenge a try. Just one sketched out story opening is a good jumping off point. Keep writing, and I hope to see stories from you all uploaded for feedback, or news of their sales! Best of luck, and see you next month for the February challenge!

Yes, thank you. I didn't use one every day (or even most days), but they were useful to get the gears turning when I couldn't think of anything to write.

Thanks for this! I, too, didn't use them every day, but a couple of them have really sparked things off for me, and I now have some great material to be working on prompted by these :)

Can't wait for February!

Frak! I missed this ... although I had promised myself (and a few others) I wouldn't. But in February ...

I'll. Be. Back

So far i still only have 4 completed stories from the prompts, but 2 of those stories are already out the door looking for homes. That includes the only 1 of those stories that is actually flash :)

I've got enough material and ideas from the unfinished prompts to last me all year, i reckon!

06-13-2012, 10:04 AM

Erm, yes, well, that is to say, the story i wrote for the day 5 prompt for this month (Fire Season--and thus titled--and which ended up at nearly 2,000 words) has placed second in the SpecFicNZ short story contest hosted by Wily Writers (http://www.wilywriters.com/blog/). The story goes live in both audio and text formats this Sunday. And i get paid by both Wily Writers and SpecFicNZ (http://www.specficnz.org/)!

Anyway, as you were, peoples :)

Izz! :PartySmil
That's absolutely fantastic news. Congratulations!
