Chapter 1 begin
Panel:
The image of a residential neighborhood appears. There are musical notes flying overhead.
Panel:
The image of a small, two-story house appears. A light is on in one of the top floor windows. The musical notes are still flying through the air.
Panel:
Zoom in on the window where the light is on. The music notes are still flying through the air.
Panel:
The view is changed to inside the room where the light is on. It is a bedroom that is covered with posters of various zombie movies. A young girl is standing in the middle of the room. She is playing a violin. She is wearing a t-shirt that say’s “Bruce Campell” inside a heart, plus a pair of baggy blue jeans, and sandals. Her hair is in bangs. The musical notes are still flying through the air.
Panel:
The young girl stops playing her violin and the musical notes disappear.
Panel:
The girl, still holding her violin, walks up to a mirror. She starts to speak to her reflection
Violin Girl: No one would ever expect a girl like you to have such a talent, would they?
Panel:
The door to the room opens up.
Panel:
A young man stands in the doorway. His hair is very short, about half an inch long. All he is wearing at the moment is a white t-shirt and black shorts. He is holding out a small book with a locking strap.
Boy: Here Mitski, just thought you might like this.
Panel:
Mitski takes the book from the boy.
Mitski: My own diary, cool. Thanks Honda.
Panel:
Mitski walks over to her desk, and Honda walks away from the door. Mitski is staring at her new diary with a joyous look.
Honda: Glad you like it. Well, I’m going to bed, don’t stay up too late.
Mitski: Okay.
Panel:
Mitski sits down at her desk and turns on a desk lamp.
Panel:
Mitski opens up her diary and pulls out a pencil from a pencil holder.
Panel:
Mitski begins to write in her new diary. Mitski begins to narrate through her diary. The banners that hold her narrative are scraps of loose-leaf paper.
Mitski (narrator): Dear Diary. Hi it’s nice to meet you, I’m Mitski. I’m just average girl about town with a not so average secret. You see, I’ve been dead for about five years now. That’s right; I’m a zombie. I’m sure you have a mess of questions for me. Well, to answer them, let’s start from where I remember.
Flashback begins
Panel:
The image of a four or five year old Mitski appears. A tall man wearing a lab coat and glasses is standing next to her. The man’s hair is slicked back, and he is smiling.
Mitski (narrator): My mother died giving birth to me. I guess it was too much for her. So growing up, it was just dad and me.
Panel:
The image of Mitski’s father working in some kind of laboratory appears.
Mitski (narrator): My dad was some kind of genius scientist. He worked for some biochemical company. Mostly stuff like mutating veggies.
Panel:
The image of little Mitski and her father playing in a garden appears.
Mitski (narrator): He was a busy man. But he always had time to spend with me.
Panel:
The image of Mitski and her father in a car appear. Mitski is older then she was in the pervious panel. She is wearing a very nice evening dress.
Mitski (narrator): This whole being dead thing actually began around my thirteenth birthday.
Panel:
The view is changed to inside the car. Mitski and her father are talking
Mitski (narrator): Dad was taking me to this nice restaurant that was really far away, to celebrate my birthday.
Panel:
A bright flash of light appears in front of Mitski.
Mitski (narrator): Then there was this bright light. I don’t remember what that light was, or where it came from.
Panel:
This panel is completely pitch black.
Mitski (narrator): After that light appeared, I just blacked out.
Panel:
Mitski is laying down on a dirty, worn out mattress.
Mitski (narrator): The next thing I knew, I was asleep in an apartment that looked like it had been abandoned for years.
Panel:
Mitski is getting herself up and looking at her watch.
Mitski: Where am I, and why is my head spinning so much?
Mitski (narrator): I was dazed and confused. I had no idea what happened to me after that light. But when I looked at my watch, well, I didn’t expect to see what I saw.
Panel:
The image of Mitski’s watch appears. Her watch reads 6:58 pm, Thursday, September 26th.
Mitski (narrator): According to my watch, I blacked out for a full twenty-four hours. Kind of sad that I blacked out my birthday.
Panel:
Mitski sits up and looks out the window. Outside the window, there is an entire city in ruins.
Mitski (narrator): Now I really didn’t expect to see an entire city falling apart like the one that I woke up in.
Panel:
Mitski is walking through the city streets. There are people in the streets, but they seem to be stumbling around instead of just walking.
Mitski (narrator): There were people in that city, but they were no help. They just walked around as if they were on the prowl for something. That, and all they seemed to talk about was finding food.
Panel:
Mitski looks over at a grocery store with a confused look as people pass by it.
Mitski (narrator): It was really weird; because there was a supermarket right there and they just ignored it.
Panel:
Mitski is inside the supermarket. She is at the produce section examining the fruits and vegetables. The supermarket interior is falling apart.
Mitski (narrator): I decided to check it out, obviously because I was starving. Now I used to have a strict vegan diet, but nothing in produce seemed that appealing to me, mainly because they were all rotten and covered with maggots.
Panel:
Mitski is examing an apple. A woman with multiple of cuts and scars on her face, and is wearing a ratty old dress, approaches Mitski.
Mitski (narrator): Now what happened next was just creepy and gross.
Panel:
Mitski puts the apple back and turns towards the woman. The woman holds up some kind of mass of meat.
Woman: Eat this.
Mitski: What? No, I can’t, really. Meat is murder.
Panel:
The woman holds the meat up closer to Mitski’s face. Mitski leans back a little bit.
Woman: Eat.
Panel:
Mitski starts to lick her lips a little bit.
Mitski: Well, that does look kind of good.
Panel:
Mitski picks up the mystery meat and begins to eat it with her hands.
Panel:
Mitski finishes the meat and has a large bloody mess on her face and dress.
Mitski (narrator): So much for being a vegan.
Mitski: Well, I’m a carnivore now. But I don’t care. At least I’m not hungry.
Panel:
Mitski is now in a department store, looking at clothing.
Mitski (narrator): Needless to say, that lump of flesh I had was quite messy. I had to find a change of clothes. No one seemed to mind that I didn’t pay for any of them.
Panel:
Mitski is now wearing a black t-shirt with overalls. She is now in a music store looking at a violin.
Mitski (narrator): It was both creepy and dull in this city. I had to find a way to keep myself occupied and entertained. So I decided to take up an instrument. A simple violin was perfect, needs no power or heavy equipment. Plus, it seemed to call to me.
Panel:
Mitski is back in the apartment she woke up in. She is standing in the middle of the room, playing her violin.
Mitski (narrator): So my first day in this dead city was odd, but not bad. It was like that for the next five years.
Panel:
Mitski is exploring the city streets. People are still wandering around aimlessly.
Mitski (narrator): I eventually got used to my strange new lifestyle. I even grew to like it. Who would hate having not to go to school at all?
Panel:
Mitski is back at the supermarket. She is eating another mass of mystery meat.
Mitski (narrator): What took the longest to adjust to was my strange new lust for meat. It was good, but it felt so wrong.
Panel:
Mitski is back at the department store, trying on outfits.
Mitski (narrator): Now what I really enjoyed was my five-fingered discount. I could take whatever I want, and no one cared. It was awesome.
Panel:
Mitski is now at a record store looking at the CDs
Mitski (Narrator): I also explored the music shops for my favorite band, The Beatles. I found them just fine; the problem was finding some working batteries.
Panel:
Mitski is walking down the street with lots of bags. People in prison uniforms are stumbling down the street. They are badly scared and their uniforms are torn and covered in blood. They are very pale with blank expressions.
Mitski (narrator): Now there were mobs of people in prison uniforms wondering the streets. Either they were all on parole, or the prison has bad management.
Panel:
Mitski is sleeping in her new apartment. The apartment has new furniture, rugs, and the walls are covered with movie posters.
Mitski (narrator): But for some reason, I felt safe there, safe enough to sleep soundly.
Panel:
Mitski is walking through an alley carrying some more bags.
Mitski (narrator): I lived a pretty good life; I was provided for all my needs and was asked nothing in return. But then, one day not too long ago, my life just became very complicated. That happened when I came across a strange couple.
Panel:
The image of a teenaged couple walking through the broken city streets appears. The boy is Honda; he is wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, all stars, and a denim jacket. The girl has long blonde hair and is wearing a tube top with a mini skirt and open toed heels. The girl has a fearful look, but Honda seems to be calm.
Mitski (narrator): It was weird to see people like them around here. They seemed to be more human then anyone else here. I decided to spy on them for a while, study them, and understand what they were doing. But during that time, I had the urge to jump out and attack them like some kind of lioness.
Panel:
The view is changed to behind Honda and the girl he’s with. You can barely see Mitski peering around the corner from an alley.
Girl: Honda, I’m scared. I want to go home.
Honda: Chill, babe, we just have to spend five more minutes in the dead city and then we’re in. You want to be in, don’t you?
Girl: Yes.
Honda: Then relax. I’m here, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Panel:
The image is changed to a zoom in of Mitski as she’s peering around the corner. Mitski has a shocked expression and there is lots of screaming going on.
Mitski (narrator): Now what happen next was absolutely horrible. It answered a few questions, but sparked so many others
Flashback ends and it’s back into Mitski’s room.
Panel:
Mitski is still writing in her diary. Honda is talking through the door.
Honda: Mitski, it’s getting late, please turn out that light.
Mitski: Okay
Panel:
Mitski closes her diary
Mitski: Well, looks like I have to end this story tomorrow.
