But, for the first time, online content is being accepted in other categories as part of a newspaper's entry. These online submissions are limited to stories and images, and each entry featuring online content must also include material published in the newspaper's print edition.

However, in the categories of breaking news reporting and breaking news photography, Pulitzer officials will now permit entries consisting only of material published online.

The prize board, which has monitored the growth of online journalism since the late 1990s, said that the new rules reflect a study of online journalism started a year ago. "The board will continue to watch the evolution of this medium," Gissler said.

The new rules stipulate that any online material submitted "must depict its original publication on the Web, not its subsequent update or alteration."

In a separate announcement, the Pulitzer Prize Board expanded the qualities judged in the feature writing category to include "concision" along with excellent writing and originality.



Not exactly 'blogging' under these rules - but who knows what's next!
