View Full Version : Somewhat Novel Idea for Children's Books

Hi All:

I have written two short stories and have sketched out 4 or 5 more. The subject of the stories are bible stories written through the eyes of various animals. For instance I have written the nativity through the eyes of a donkey and Noah's ark through the eyes of a dove. I have plans to finish Daniel (Lion) and a few others. Where might I look for a publisher for something like this? Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Get hold of a copy of Christian Writers' Market Guide and look through the publishers in there.

Go to a big Christian book store and look for books that are similar in feel and style to what you are planning, then find out who published them.

Go on-line and check out various publishing houses' oferings (Bethany House, Broadman Holman, Zondervan, and so on.)

There's no one way to find the right house. It takes work and a touch of being in the right place at the right time.

Great advice! You will want to see what similar books might already be in the marketplace.

I do not mean to quench your fire, but these ideas are anything but 'novel'. It does not mean they will not work, or that they will not be accepted for publication, but please do not think they have a unique selling point or viewpoint as they do not. It has already been done...many times. But perhaps that's because it works .... if the idea ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks for bursting my bubble logos... :) I haven't been able to find anything written/published that resembles what I am writing, but hey it doesn't mean that it isn't already out there. I am probably just not good at finding it :)

Well maybe it's just us British that have thought of it before - I do not know much about the USA market, but I imagine it will be similar themes etc. As I say, it does not mean to say you should not go ahead just because its been done before because something like Harry Potter was done before (the worst witch)!

I know that I am coming in late on this, but I disagree with you Logos, this idea is a great one, kids are profoundly affected by what they see, read and hear. I remember getting a childrenís Bible as a kid and its affects on me have rippled through time, all the way up to this day. Children need a channel for inspiration and moral teaching, in this world that will set out to corrupt them as early as possible, with pornography, drugs, selfish attitudes and rebellion not to mention, strong materialistic values. Your idea Caelin Paul is fantastic, as one who has read the Bible through 3 times, I think it is great and I donít understand what Logos, is doing (The devils work maybeÖ eh?) I really hope you have perused this, CP and ministering to children is one of the most important ministries to be in.

Thank you Master Bedroom :) Needed cheering up and that did the trick. I do agree wholeheartedly that there is a need to write good christian-content stories that are attractive to the children of today. Interestingly enough though, the one publisher who has looked at one of my stories was really not excited about the anthropomorphism of my animals (at least in the fact that they have dialogue). Have not been brave enough to send it out to another publisher. I now have four or five short stories (about 5,000) words a piece and plan to write several more. I do believe children are more likely to stay interested in a story told in this manner :)

Thanks for listening. If anyone has any good friends in the publishing business that might be prepared to give this idea a fair shake I would love to get acquainted :)

Hope everyone is having a marvelous December.

I cannot see why a Christian Agent wouldnít give it a try?

What kind of study do you do in this respect, I honestly think the idea is great but the message is very important to (Which you probably already know).

Talking animals would appeal very much to children, Walt Disney have been doing it for decades, I cannot understand why an agent would reject that tried and true method?
Donít give up on one persons negative opinion, if everyone did that, no books would be written.

Remember though, that there is allot of anti Christian sentiment out there.

What a horrible thing to say, Master Bedroom - I am doing the devil's work??!! YOU ARE MAD. Wash your snide mouth out with soap and water and get rid of that acid from your heart and mouth, along with your witch's hat.

I am not trying to 'do' anything nasty - I said the idea had been done before, if speaking the truth is wrong, then God forbid! I thought this forum was about speaking the truth and helping writers. The best way we can 'help' is by pointing them in the right direction and writers need to hear the truth even if it dissappoints them. Before Cailin goes to a lot of time and expense she needs to know the market. She needs to know her idea is not 'novel'. I am not being 'negative' merely truthful.

I NEVER said her idea is a bad one, I too think it is great, and think there is a lack of originality with children's christian books and it is an important ministry. ALL I SAID IS HER IDEA IS NOT ORIGINAL as her post heading implied it was a novel idea (It is not) - I then also tried to encourage the writer twice by saying just because its not original does not mean it will not work, as the same themes crop up again and again all over the publishing industry, and I gave Harry Potter as an example. If that ain't encouragement, what is, pray tell?

I also suggest 5,000 words is a strange word length. Too long for a picture book and too short for a children's book proper unless you go for an anthology - oh no, a critical suggestion, am I going to get slandered for suggesting that too, Master Bedroom?

At the end of the day, I am only trying to help, and if she listens to some of the suggestions on the forum from people who know what they are talking about (I have worked for three publishers) then perhaps she will get published instead of wasting her time on fruitless submissions because her style/length or whatever is wrong.

Thank you Logos :) I did not take affront to anything you said, on the contrary I agree that my idea is a strangely numbered one and I am sure there are plenty of books out there that do what I propose. However, I would like to think I have a little originality in my work. Now all I need is a publisher who will be brave enough to take a peek. Yesterday I finished Jonah's story through the eyes of the whale :) Kids would like this whale.

Now thatís a terrible thing to say, what ever happened to turn the other cheek... sheesh?

Good luck CP, the whale thingy is good.
If I get another rejection from an agent, I will be thinking of doing something of a Christian nature? Any advice, Logos or CP?
