Today, 25 November, makes it 20 years since I started the first book with my Atlantic City characters. That first book isn't something I want to publish, but the characters and their stories were so interesting I kept writing them. After I literally grew up with them (I was eleven and they were eleven when they were created), I've learnt a lot about how to be a better writer, give depth to the characters, and create interesting storylines that flow well and make sense. Even now that my original generation are in their sixties, I still see them in my mind's eye as about 11-13 years old, the way they look in the various drawings I made of them way back when.
Earlier this month I finished the long-hiatused sequel to my superlong Russian historical novel. The first book was written on and off over 8.5 years, so I was very proud to finish the even-longer sequel in only five months. The first book's final length is about 348,000 words, and the sequel is 406,000. I'm predicting the future third book will be even longer. I think I'm going to e-publish them because of the length.
And I'm working on the third book in another of my family sagas, set from 1979-84. It's sort of a modern retelling of Margaret Sidney's Phronsie Pepper. I actually think this'll be pretty short for one of my non-YA books and cap in around 150,000 words!
