I was told that my query should compare the project to other similar works. I know this is tricky, but how about:

It is similar to John Hartís A King of Lies and Down River in theme, tone, and setting.

I don't know anything about John Hart or his titles, but that sentence seems succinct and informative to me.

Some agents like it when you compare your MS to other works, some don't.

Either way I don't think it's a total killer.

I wouldn't do it, but like DJ said, probably not a killer.

I did have an agent respond once that she loved my letter, but she didn't like one of the authors I'd comped, so she didn't think she'd enjoy my book. Grr. That said, I agree that it was an unusual response. Agents often want to see that you understand the market for your book as much as they want you to place it for them. It's usually not a big deal, though.

I don't like including comps, myself, unless the agent specifically requests them in the guidelines, but I am for my current book. It's a clarity issue, in my case.
