Character A asks a stupid question and character B answers with, 'What rock have you been under?'

I need to find a substitute for that phrase because a few chapters back, poor old A was trapped under a rock (B saves him) and as you can imagine, it would be laughable to have B say that line.

Problem is, I can't for the life of me think of an alternative (not witty enough!). Any ideas?

'What planet have you been living on' doesn't grab me.

Sorry if this isn't the correct forum, I couldn't really think where else to put it.

Whew! I was afraid you required me to be witty.

Possible responses to stupid question:

Character B raps Character A's forehead. "Earth to A, come in please!"

Character B raps Character A's forehead. "Hello? Anybody home?"

Character B says, "You been living in a cave, man?"

Character B says, "Right, that question makes sense. Not."

Character B says, "What are you, some kind of moron? I know, I know, you're the best kind."

Character B says, "I can't believe you said that. Seriously."

It depends on how they talk to one another, how close they are, how much they can put one another down while knowing it's kidding.

Maryn, hoping this helps a bit

Thanks so much for the responses. I love the 'living in a cave.' Will probably go with that one as gives you a nice visual. And the moron one made me chuckle.

Says something about me that I couldn't even come up with one. I must be exceedingly dull. ^^

"You been doing the turtle and using my rock as a hide-hole, or what?"

"Which dung pile are you pushing in this crap heap?"

"Snowy White 1982" (It's what my hubby uses when I ask him something he can't understand  :D)

"When they invented the wheel, you followed in the path of the square one, right?"

"Earth to everyone." Looks round while pointing at A. "It's alright, they brought him back."

These are priceless. Thanks people - really appreciate it. I actually laughed out loud at the dung pile one.

JimmyB27, hmm...that is food for thought. It would tread a fine line as A did get badly injured (also it was kinda B's fault that he ended up under that rock) but these two have an edgy relationship so it'd be a fitting remark. Might play around with that one.

From my collection of cherished responses:

I don't know what your problem is, but I'll bet it's hard to pronounce.
Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.
I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid.
I'm already visualizing the duct tape over your mouth.
I'll try being nicer if you'll try being smarter.
I see you've set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public.

Arthur Hailey used a good comeback in "Airport." It went something like this:

"Madam, are being deliberately obtuse or are you just naturally stupid?"

Oh Lordy, I just had to edit my posts. I got A and B mixed up (firstly, because my brain went missing a few days ago and I've yet to find it, and secondly, because one of the character's name begins with A and my eyes glazed over and...oh never mind). I shoulda just used their darned names instead of A and B (I just didn't think anyone would be interested in their names).

It only affects Maryn's post. Sorry!

Ahem. Anyway, great responses.

Al Stevens, character A is actually blonde! :) I like the Airport line.

Bonita, like the lightbult one, it's another great visual.

"Maybe I left you under that rock a little too long?"

"Have you been under... oh right, you have."

"I bet in moments like these you miss good old bedrock."

"I would hit you with a rock, but I worry it might make you nostalgic."

"Not much oxygen under the rock, eh?"

"Were you dropped as a child or something?"

"Ain't the sharpest tool in the drawer, are ya?"

"Hush, go play somewhere else. People with three-digit IQ are talking."
