Okay... I want to get some new Christmas music, and I'd like some advice. Any santa's little helpers?

Name one Christmas song or CD you like, and one you don't:

LIKE: Leon Redbone, "Christmas Island" -- if you haven't heard him, do. Think mint juleps on the verandah, about 1930.

NOT: Mannheim Steamroller, ... period. Sorry, I tried, several. Not for me.

Father Christmas-the Kinks

Some awful rendition of the Little Drummer Boy that I just heard at Starbucks

One I like: "A Johnny Ace Christmas" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

;)

One I hate: "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" (aka "Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire") by Johnny Mathis.

TranSiberian Orchestra--its hard to describe, but they make Christmas music real, again...

Like: Carol of the Bells (With bells only, no vocals)

Dislike: Any new song by current artist (i.e.: Jessica Simpson, Destiny's Child, etc.,) They seem to try too hard.

I really like the Brian Setzer Orchestra Boogy Woogy Christmas album... its fun and fast moving, I get so tired of all the slow moving plinky christmas stuff, I want to celebrate, not be put into a geriatric home.

CLick on http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006J48Q/qid=1133494047/sr=8-7/ref=pd_bbs_7/102-7322256-1078542?v=glance&s=music&n=507846 and listen to the first 30 seconds of Jingle Bells, see if it doesn;t get your toes tapping!

Dislikes - slow plinky stuff, plus manneheim steamroller just sounds too fakey, little-kid casio synthesizer for me.

Another vote for TransSiberian Orchestra and one for Carol of the Bells without vocals.

Add A Winter's Solstice by Windham Hill Recordings (a complication by several of their artists).

I've come to dislike virtually all pop Christmas music, particularly the schmaltzy ones about people coming home for Christmas and surprising their families.

My favorite Christmas song of all time is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". Makes me cry, or at least brings tears to my eyes, no matter where I am or what I'm doing.

I absolutely detest the Mariah Carey caterwailing Christmas album.

For whatever strange reason, I adore The Waitresses "Christmas Rap" it cheers me up, and just throws me headlong into the spirit. And Tony Bennet makes me swoon.

Passionately Hate, with a passionate hatred...Chipmunks, and am seriously not fond of "Frosty the Snowman"

Another:

LIKE: "Christmas Cocktails" from the Ultra-Lounge series. Cool and Christmassy, in that Dean Martin/George Shearing/Peggy Lee way.

NOT: (oh, well; Mariah Carey's already out) Let's say... Wiggles.

I think the Wiggles look like Star Trek rejects. And what's with the colors? Don't they wear the same colors as the Teletubbies?

Interesting factoid about Teletubbies. When I was in college a few years ago I remember hearing a statistic that the second highest viewership for Teletubbies was college students.

Odd thing was - if I was surfing tv channels and saw them on, I found I would stop and watch them. It was like they had a strange calming effect - which maybe that's why they have such a high college viewership - college students lives are full of stress.

Like: Windham Hill's "Winter Solstice" (George Winston)

Dislike: Jewel's Christmas CD. (Personal reasons only; I liked it at one time, but it has some bad associations for me now.)

SO DAMN MANIPULATIVE, and yet it still works on me every time. Kills me. So I can't decide if I love it or hate it.

O, Holy Night <<<<my favorite

My favourite, too! Especially in French!
I love al the old traditionals, ones that are actually about the Christmas message, the birth of Christ. They touch the deepest place inside me.

Don't like all modern Chistmas songs. Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph and all the rest.

However, there are some in-between: White Christmas, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (I loved this song on When Harry met Sally...)

LIKE: Silent Night. Just people singing it.
LIKE: Vince Guaraldi's music for "A Charlie Brown Christmas" -- how can you not?
LIKE: "Heat Miser/Cold Miser" from "The Year Without a Santa Claus" (thanks for the assist, PrettySpecialGal)

NOT: (well, it's not bad, but not great) Harry Connick Jr's "When My Heart Finds Christmas". I keep trying to really like him -- I've got a couple of his discs, and I've seen him -- but something about him just doesn't resonate with me. I can only 'kinda like' him.

I am Santa Claus by can't remember the name of the guys who do it- it's a spoof of Iron Man. Too Cool

Randolph the Rough Nosed Reindeer by Justin Wilson (Gramma's favorite- can't resist it)

Love: Traditional Christmas hymns when they are sung as hymns
Alvin and the Chipmunks and Mannheim Steamroller
Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Carol of the Bells (haven't heard the version with vocals yet).
Santa Baby and pretty much every spoof song about christmas.

Hate: Any song involving snow (I live in Florida if people here wanted to have a winter wonderland we would move.) Anything modern aka rock singers
