I was wondering what type (or if any) dressing/film/cream would be prescribed to a patient with 2nd degree burns after he has been discharged from hospital.

Thanks to anyone who has time to help.

It would depend upon the location and total body surface area of involvement. It could just be a moisturizer cream and a light dressing. If it's circumferential, across a joint, on the face, or in somebody who tends to keloid it gets more complicated but generally 2nd degree burns will heal reasonably well.

Hi Fallen,

Where I work, Silvadene cream is still considered the first choice for treating second degree burns. It looks like whipped cream, prevents infection and soothes the skin/reduces the pain.

Here's a link: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000724/

There are a few exceptions, like if it's a facial burn, because Silvadene does contain colloidal silver and can discolor the skin (blueish/brownish) as it heals.

As far as dressings go, I've seen a lot of variation. As long as it's sterile and non-adherent, pretty much anything goes.

Here's another link with basic burn homecare info: http://familydoctor.org/familydoctor/en/prevention-wellness/staying-healthy/first-aid/first-aid-burns.html

Hope that helps.

That's just what I needed. Thank you -- both of you. It's the little details that count. ;)
