This is local, so I don't know if there's been much attention on it yet.
Last August a bandstand collapsed at the Indiana State Fair. One of the people who died was Christina Santiago, partnered to Alisha Brennon in an Illinois civil union. Brennon has filed lawsuits seeking damages for her partner's death, something which would be routine for a married couple.
Indiana has voted to ban gay marriages and deny recognition of out-of-state same-sex unions, but the amendment has not completely passed.
The tricky bit is the laws of the state where people are married (Illinois in this case) are supposed to apply. Ms. Brennon should be awarded damages. The laws of Indiana do not yet officially refuse to recognise out-of-state marriage laws.
If it's allowed to go forward, this case may help towards the national, universal recognition of gay marriage.
