So we've finally been showing our youngest "Doctor Who."

We saw the teaser for "Victory of the Daleks."

Youngest said, "Who's Winston Churchill?"

We pulled out the Dorling Kindersley WWII book and went through it together before we watched the episode.

Which is the sort of thing we had been hoping for. :D

Cool!

I learned about WWII barrage balloons thanks to Doctor Who. I was really able to impress my WWII buff mom with that (she learned about them after I did and was surprised I already knew something about their use).

Dr. Who was originally conceived as an educational TV show with The Doctor traveling different space and time with a companion to talk about sciences and another to talk about history.

Tried to impose some curiosity to my little sister and have had no luck. :(

Oh, I know. But they kind of blew it by the second plotline, didn't they?

Still, evil psycho futuristic alien cyborgs do add something to educational TV. :D

Totally unrelated to Dr. Who, but I learned half my European history from RTS games.

I passed 8th grade World History thanks to having read over and over the historical companion text of Age of Empires II. I was the only one in my class who understood Feudalism.

Daleks teach future roboticians that always make stairs the robot's worst enemy.

It explains Roomba pretty well.

The daleks are totally anti facist propaganda. They always lose because they are so fixed on supreme victory with no compromise.

There are many lessons in that...

As an aside, watched 'Destiny of the Daleks' last night and realised how pathetically bad classic Who Daleks really were compared to the sleek, scary modern counterparts :)
