No, you should be able to just use the link then enter a username.
If it doesn't work, it might be that you need Java, or maybe your system is blocking it for some reason. If a pop-up comes up asking you to Run a program or Decline or whatever, you need to Run - that's Java trying to work.

Pretty much everybody here likes to write. Or does it nevertheless.
I found myself liking chat, although as an experienced chatter at another site I know it can become a time-suck. But you see many of the same people there you see here, only it may be the ones you don't know quite so well, who seem eager to get better acquainted through banter and such. Warm and welcoming, it seemed to me.
Although I confess it helps a lot if you type fairly quickly.

You don't need a password, but the chat room doesn't work unless there's a Mod present (someone with @ before their chat ID). That was a change from the past year or two.
