Is it a gorilla or an elephant? And exactly how many pounds does he REALLY weigh anyhow?

I speak of the famous 400-lb gorilla in the living room.

Or is he a 700-lb gorilla?

Or is he an 800-lb gorilla?

Or is he REALLY an elephant and not a gorilla at all? --in which case his weight would fall into an entirely different scale.

And is he a "he" or a "she?"

Tuff day at work?

Bored?

Too much chocolate?

Sleepless night?

Not enough sex?

Broke? ($$)

I need more information to figure this out.

(Inquiring minds want to know.)

Yeah, not entirely sure what you're asking here.

If you need to know the weight, weigh him/her? Or just say 'A bloody great gorilla.'

You can tell the difference between an elephant and a gorilla - presence of long snaky nose is a giveaway. If in doubt, use the mouse test?

You've completely forgotten to mention color.

I've always been pleased with the pink elephant in the room.

Just need to watch out for where and when she'll sit down.

He or she is exactly what you say they are. So make sure you say what you want.

I hear "800-pound gorilla" most often. I might've heard the elephant version used before, but I can't remember the weight used. "Two-ton," maybe?

The joke which is the source material for this common turn of phrase, which made the rounds in the 1960s, involved a 500-pound gorilla whose gender and color did not matter to the joke and were therefore not mentioned, joke writers deleting anything which does not move the humor forward.

I usually hear 800 pound gorilla, as well. Never heard weight used when it's an elephant. I think people just assume an elephant is huge, and weighs a bunch.

People speak of an 800 pound gorilla. If it were an elephant in stead, then it might be an 8,000 pound one.

The "800lb gorilla" and the "elephant in the room" are not the same thing. An "800lb gorilla" is something that is too big to fight, to large and unwieldy to change. The elephant in the room is the big thing that is obviously there but everyone is pretending not to see.

I've always heard 800-pound gorilla.

What do you do with a gorilla with three balls? Walk him and pitch to the giraffe.

"The elephant in the room" is the thing everyone is aware of and does not wish to discuss. Its gender has not been specified.

"The 800-pound gorilla" is the thing that can sit where it wants (or shit where it wants, depending on who's telling the riddle), i.e., the thing that's an unstoppable force. It is definitely male; even with the hyperbole, female gorillas never top 400 pounds, whereas male gorillas can tip the scales at 600.

Sometimes people (I'm looking at you, Mike Huckabee!) mix the metaphors, and talk about "the 800-pound gorilla in the room." I am not sure whether they mean that a stitch in time saves a rolling stone, or whether a whistling girl gathers no moss.
