Excessive consumption of saturated fats may increase the blood cholesterol levels thus increasing the risk of heart disease.

Is this the appropriate usage of thus? Should be and or comma before thus?

I'd go without comma or and, purely because what follows after 'thus' doesn't have a subject of it's own.

A bit like 'and then':

The girls screamed and then ran home
The girls screamed, and then they ran home.

Other others may disagree :)
