View Full Version : Melbourne Australia anyone?

Hello! I'm writing from drizzly/suddenly warm Melbourne and wonder if there are any other Melburnians about.

08-10-2011, 12:00 PM
I'm living in Sydney at the moment. Does that count as close enough? ;)

Not a Melbournian myself, but close by - Adelaide.

I'd love to live in Melbourne some day. I hear it's a lot more exciting than Adelaide, which wouldn't be too difficult. :tongue

Eh, at this point it's a distant dream.

08-10-2011, 01:08 PM
nope, not from melbourne... Upper Hunter Valley, NSW :) Have always wanted to visit, though.

08-10-2011, 03:59 PM
I'm in sunny WA. Be jealous of our sun while you roll in our $$.

08-10-2011, 04:07 PM
Sydney as well... but I really dig Melbourne when I visit

08-12-2011, 10:10 AM
Brisbane here but I've got the house on the market (I am an optimist) and want to buy a fifth wheeler and hit the road for a few years. So I might see you all at some stage.

08-12-2011, 10:10 AM
Sydney - but I'm awfully fond of Melbourne :)

I'm in Melbourne.

I'm from Melbourne!

The area just outside the Crown with the two big posts that pop out fire at night, that area is a lot like Darling Harbour in Sydney but our Star City just can't compare.

Those fire things scare the crap out of me when I walk passed them unawares!

08-14-2011, 05:23 AM
Hello everyone! It's nice to see a lot of aussies on here, in any case :)
@Mumut, that sounds exciting. I do love Brisbane though. I even meant to visit last month, but decided to save my dollars. Or at least try too.

08-14-2011, 05:26 AM
I'm also fond of Sydney. I was there in May for a zine fair at the MCA. If I could be buried anywhere it would be at Kinokuniya bookshop! Damn that place is huge.

I've never been to WA or Adelaide though. I am friends with a LOT Perthies though. One of these days I will be visiting Adelaide, as there's this festival around the same time as Fringe that I always mean to go to.

Yup, that's Adelaide - city of festivals.

I've been to only 1 Fringe show before, and it was alright.

I still think Melbourne would be much more exciting. :tongue

08-14-2011, 11:42 AM
G'day all! I'm a Melbournian!!!

08-25-2011, 07:06 AM
I'm also fond of Sydney.

A couple of years back I visited Tassie and really liked the craft markets in Hobart. It was early December and if anyone said they might be going to have a white winter I'd have believed them. It was freezing. Oh, then it rained for five minutes. Then the suncame out and it was hot for five minutes. Anyway, it was interesting.

08-25-2011, 07:53 AM
I'm from Melbourne too.

Adelaide has already been having 20C+ days, and it's still winter!

Silly hot city. I'd much prefer the cooler Melbourne. :)

08-25-2011, 01:56 PM
We're on track to have the warmest August ever, has been 20-21 degrees for the last week. So don't start packing yet!

08-25-2011, 02:24 PM
It's been picture perfect all week where I am!

It just feels wrong to be able to wear shorts in winter and not be cold...

But summer is why I really want to be in Melbourne. Adelaide has some of the hottest summers in the country, whereas Melbourne has some of the cooler ones.

I think Hobart gets colder though.

08-26-2011, 03:19 AM
It doesn't feel cool when we get a week straight of 45 degrees, so I hate to think how hot it must be for you! I've often contemplated summering in Tassie, or better still moving to a cooler country--I hate the heat!

Cliff Face
08-26-2011, 04:08 AM
I was under the impression that Melbourne summers topped out at about 40C on occasional days...

Adelaide generally has 44C+ or so for up to 10 days in a row most Februarys.

Hmm. Maybe I should move to Canada... :tongue

08-26-2011, 05:14 AM
Nope, certainly the last few years we have had stretches of over 40. Usually as soon as we go back to school... :-( On the other hand, we have a lot of Canadian teachers here now, and they tell me they feel colder here than back at home because our heating is rubbish!

Gippslander here, but I'm studying at Monash Clayton, so I'm pretty close to Melbourne most days. Being a country girl, I have to admit, I'd rather be as far as possible from the city. :p

08-26-2011, 07:40 AM
I've lived most of my life in Sydney, but was born in Melbourne, and have kept visiting for years, both to see family and to go shopping, or to see/do things. Melbourne is a wonderful city; I enjoyed the architecture there too.

08-26-2011, 07:56 AM
Live in Melb too, all my life!

Not when we get your second hand weather!

Sorry Rufus. *sheepish*

Believe me, I'd rather it went the other way and Adelaide got Melbourne's second-hand weather.

08-27-2011, 12:01 PM
I'm in Perth but I have a novel set in Melbourne. Hooray!

08-27-2011, 12:49 PM
Nearly but not quite Melbourne. I live about 45mins up the Western Hwy.

10-04-2011, 10:42 AM
Ballarat here, but close enough.

Believe me, I'd rather it went the other way and Adelaide got Melbourne's second-hand weather.

It's a hard life.

It is. :)

I'd still like to move to Melbourne. Anyone got half a million dollars for a house just lying around? :tongue

10-14-2011, 03:56 PM
I'm another Melbournian here. Does anyone know any good local writing groups?

Cliff Face
10-16-2011, 02:01 AM
I forget the exact name of the organisation, but there's meant to be a "Writer's Centre" in every Australian city. Like I said, I can't remember the exact name... But I think it had those 2 words in it anyway.

And chances are they could point you in the right direction, even if they don't have a writer's group themselves.

Actually, I'd love to experience a Canadian winter. :) I much much much prefer the cold over the hot.

Plus, y'know, snowball fights. ;) We don't get those here!

Oh gods yes! I'm with Cliff on that one! Cold weather trumps hot!

I love the way so many shops in Toronto are underground.

Me! I'm a Melbournian! LOVE it here. I think I've drunk so much coffee it's now in my blood... :) but yes, the house prices are ludicrous. (Which is why we rent. Bah.)

@Pipedreamer, I haven't been to any yet, but I'm in the process of organising to try out a few. I know there's a group that meets every Tuesday night at a CBD pub to chat about writing - not a crit group, just a social group. You can find out more about them if you google Melbourne City Writers (there's a twitter feed, fb, etc). Hopefully you'd be able to hear more about Melbourne writers groups by contacting them and seeing how you go?

fresh melbournite here, originally from perth

02-15-2012, 07:51 AM
Melbournian here! Just back from living in London (I miss it) and Melbs seems so foreign to me, its gonna be hard to get used to!

04-28-2012, 06:07 AM

I'm a Melbourne dweller... and god, the public transport sucks. :D

09-15-2012, 08:51 AM
Just moved from Sydney to Melbourne this year. After a bit of a break, I joined a couple of writer's forums this week to distract from the real work of...re-writes ;)

I write YA

10-11-2012, 05:30 AM
Hi guys! I've lived in Melbourne all my life (although in winter I'm often tempted to move somewhere warmer). :)

10-11-2012, 11:54 AM
I'm on the Gold Coast.

10-13-2012, 01:02 PM
Melburnian here!

Since we're all writers (professional or otherwise) what's the consensus on the spelling of Melburnian/Melbournian?

Cliff Face
10-13-2012, 01:08 PM
I always pictured it with the 'o'. But I don't live in Melbourne, so I'm not the authority on such things. :)

Welcome to AW all you new people. :)

Close enough to melbourne here.

Hello to all!
