Announcing the First Absolute Write Speculative Fiction Short Story Anthology! (http://absolutewrite.com/2011/08/02/announcing-the-first-absolute-write-speculative-fiction-short-story-anthology/)

By MacAllister Stone, on August 2nd, 2011
Weíre looking for a few great (short) stories from AWers:
We really canít include stories longer than 10,000 words
Stories should have strong SpecFic elements (science fiction, fantasy, magical realism, horror, paranormal, etc.)
Stories must be written within the last year
No reprints, please. We want to showcase fresh new material
We will pay 2Ę per word for accepted stories. We ask for one-time rights to simultaneously produce an e-book version and a print version.
You may submit your story (in standard manuscript format) in as an .rtf email attachment to: submissions@absolutewrite.com.
Submissions close September 1, 2011!
Proposed date of publication of the anthology is Thanksgiving.
If you have questions, by all means ask. Send a PM with your question to the moderator of the genre SF/F forum (thatís Pthom (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/member.php?u=18), otherwise known as Peter).

Good luck, everyone! :)

Last I checked, August comes before September.

I just looked at a wall calendar and can confirm that rumor ;)

It was a stickied announcement this morning, but I can't see it now. This is very, very appealing, but I think all my spec articles are either under sub elsewhere or way more than a year old. I'll have to look.

And I'm already hoping there's one next year.

Whoot! I definitely need to do this. Anybody know what distribution channels AW will be using? E-books, print books (stores or online order only), etc.?

Anybody who submitted a story hear anything yet? I sent one in the other day.

I'm one last edit away from submitting mine. This is such a cool idea!

You probably won't hear anything until the window has closed, and Mac and Pthom have a chance to look through all the submissions. Give 'em room to breathe, folks, at least until mid-to-late September. I gather the number of submissions is much larger than they expected.

I agree that it's a cool idea, a great way to introduce writers, and to showcase AW to the rest of the genre world.

We're working through stuff -- but Filigree is absolutely right, we've already received almost twice the subs I expected we'd get.

But don't let that make you shy! If you have a story, SEND IT!

No holding of the breath here, I have way too many deadlines to meet before and after next week's surgery.

Would be super exciting though, right? ;)

Okay. So we send the story right, no annoying cover letters or things like that, right?

Mac, is this going to be an annual thingummy? I haven't anything on hand this year, but will be prepared like the boy scouts if you do it again.

I'm very eager to be a proud BUYER, however. :)

Those questions are all answered in the other thread, the one linked to earlier. In short, a brief cover letter is always a good idea, and a professional way to present yourself -- but it's not going to make or break you.

I'm very eager to be a proud BUYER, however. :)You know, I'm not sure yet. We'll see how this goes, first. :D We've also got a number of members interested in seeing other genres represented in the future, as well.

It for-sure won't be the last big AW community project, though.

Hi, Mac. The crass commercial part of me is wondering if you couldn't use AW's link with Erin Morgenstern as part of the advertising for this venture.
'We're the writing group that helped refine THE NIGHT CIRCUS. Come see the other cool writers who work and play on AbsoluteWrite!'

But then, I am a crass commercial hack always looking for an angle.

Actually, it's a shame that it won't be ready at the end of September, or I would totally plug it to everyone I meet at Fantasycon. Hmm...if we had some flyers done...if the art was ready in time...

I want into this thing badly enough I already sent MacAlister a picture of a cute, fluffy kitten I found out in the road and I offered to trade it for my acceptance....

I received a very polite rejection stating MacAlister wasn't really interested in dead ones....
