Yeah, you have a reason to be excited - getting Haynesworth and Ochocinco for next to nothing!

I'm a Broncos fan so I'm excited to see what John Fox (and Tim Tebow) can do

Watch out for the KC Chiefs this year. They improved massively last season over previous ones, and I expect them to do Even better this season. They were first in their devision and ended the season 10-6... not bad, I say. I hope KC can go all the way this season, but they'll probably lose in the first round of the playoffs like they always do.

GO CHIEFS!

The Tennessee Titans will have a new coach and a new starting quarterback.

It's going to be what coaches like to call "a rebuilding year." I suspect most people here will be happy if they win half their games. At worst, it could be very ugly.

The good news: we no longer have to hear about Pacman Jones being arrested every week. Or, at least, not arrested here.

The Lions are on the way up. They lost a lot of really good, close games last season. If Stafford can stay healthy they might stand a chance. Could use a little more in the rushing game, though.

I am boycotting the NFL this year. And the NBA. Was considering a boycott of college football, but my sports nut genes won't let me do it.

So, as we are less than a month away from college football, I confess to a small feeling of excitement but mostly just a general disgust with the NCAA.

*sigh*

Okay. I admit to having a passing interest in them, but in no way do I believe they are going to be any better than 50/50.

They do have a very good defensive line and they've improved their linebacking somewhat. The secondary is still suspect. Stafford has to prove he can stay healthy, but that's hard to do with such a porous offensive line.

Brian Urlacher's mother passed away (http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/6968988/chicago-bears-brian-urlacher-leaves-team-death-mother) unexpectedly at the age of 51. My sympathies to him and his family.

That said, if Urlacher rejoins the team for Sunday's game against the Saints, the last place I'd want to be is on the Saint's offense...

I only saw a couple of clips.

We only get to see the NBC game on a Sunday. Last season I was totally pissed off with NBC. We got 4 or 5 Colts games (and I hate the Colts) and only one Bears game. And it is was the most embarrassing game I've ever seen the Bears play.

How does everyone feel about the automatic review of scoring plays? To me, it seems to have taken something away from the celebrations. I guess no player wants to look a complete arse by celebrating then having the score taken away. But it's a shame. I really liked a lot of the dances.

And the Titans were supposed to win, as the Steelers are old, the O-Line sucks, yada, yada. I suspect we will not go to the SB but I soooo want THE PACK to get beaten in the playoffs. And they will. They barely escaped with a win against the Falcons tonight. They have an EASY f'ing schedule. *Of course* they're off to the playoffs. Da Bears should be able to eliminate them. Or the Saints. 1) A long lock out destroys the competative balance they want established.

I might disagree with this assertion:

- there are five teams in the playoffs this year who weren't there last year (Lions (!!!), Bengals, Texans, Forty-Niners, Broncos)

- a number of playoff slots weren't decided until the last weekend (Broncos over Raidesr/Chargers, Giants over Cowboys, Bengals over Jets adn Titans, just off the top of my head - might not have it exactly right)

- several teams just missed the playoffs and made good runs in the last half of the season (viz. Eagles, Chargers, Cardinals) or just fell near the end (Jets, Raiders, Cowboys, Dolphins, Seahawks, Titans)

- a couple of other teams would've made strong arguments if it weren't for key injuries (Bears, Colts??)
- others didn't do all that well, but showed promise for next season (Chiefs, Panthers)

There were really only a few teams that just plain stank [YMMV, of course] (Browns, Colts, Rams, Vikings, Bucs). The Packers, Saints, Patriots and Forty-Niners look pretty ironclad.

It seemed to me a pretty good season for competition.

Gilroy Cullen
01-03-2012, 06:53 PM
I might disagree with this assertion:

See, the important part of my quote is that THEY want established. Not the one that the fans wanted to see.

Yes, injuries screwed things up.

Yes, we have newer teams entering the playoffs.

Lions and Texans: They had the direction for the past two seasons, it was inevitable for that.

49ers: Just needed the right coach.

Colts: Manning always hid their flaws. Now we finally see them.

Eagles and Cowwhiners: Always overhyped. No, wait, I'm a fan of one of their primary opponents, so I can't be honest on this assessment... Yup. Always overhyped. Besides, its Philly and Dallas...

(Oh, and you missed one in the just plain sucked list: Redskins...)

Some of the "local" TV channels out of Casper that broadcast some of the football games decided it wanted to jack up their rates to the satellite company. The satellite company refused to pay, so the TV channel cut off their broadcasting to the satellite company. Great. The only thing that lets hubby and I take a break from the work is football, and a portion of that has been taken. So I couldn't get the Denver/Steelers and Giants/Falcons games. Jeez.

From a Niners fan:

Final score -- SF 36 NO 32

Saints score go ahead TD with under 2:00 left, Niners score winning TD with nine seconds left -- what a game!

My wife and I are 49ers fans going back to "The Catch" which occurred 30 years ago this weekend.

Today we witnessed "The Catch II" and after all these years wandering in the wilderness, it feels so good.

I got mad respect for the Saints. Drew Brees is crazy good, but the Niners worked hard to get that home game over the Saints and today it paid off in full. It was a great game.

The 49ers may not be a Super Bowl team, but you know something? They're one win away from being one.

:hooray: GO NINERS! :hooray:

So, out of the four possible Super Bowl combinations, three have really interesting back storylines. It has a fifty percent chance of being a rematch of a past Super Bowl (Ravens vs Giants or Giants vs Patriots). And there's the chance to have a pair of brothers against each other in the Super Bowl.

I really wasn't expecting the Giants to win that one so heavily.

I just watched the highlights and boy oh boy. Not a good day for the Packers offense to have a mare. I did feel for Rogers

It's good to see the end of this season's "Mediocre Tebow" time. Won't get my respect as a QB until he has more than one game in a row with a 50% completion percentage. (One game he went 10 of 35? Seriously?)

While I won't cry over whoever is in the Superbowl, I think it will be awesome to have a battle of the coasts. Personally, I'm rooting for 49ers vs Ravens. But that's because I gotta go with Maryland team over all others.

That was a hell of a game. Though it sucks that Cundiff missed that fieldgoal. Not the first time he's missed a big one this season, so the Ravens will likely get a new kicker in the offseason.

I'm so disappointed about the Ravens.....

What a time to miss a kick! And from a short distance. Numpty!

Think I'll put my money on the Giants.

Probably the worst game Brady played all season. Who'd have thought the Pats could win it with rushing and defense? I absolutely hate the helpless feeling of watching and waiting for the opposing team to miss the game-winning field goal. (Of course I love the euphoria of seeing the ball go wide.)

The Giants are going to be a tough opponent to beat, but in one game anything can happen. Should be fun. Go Pats!

I think the Pats are 3 point favorites going into the Super Bowl. That makes sense, if Brady plays how he is capable of playing and the defense holds up their end of things, the Patriots should have a small advantage. Although I would like to see Eli Manning and the Giants win another Super Bowl.

The sports writers think this will be a high scoring game. I thought it was around 55 points total. Either way, it should be exciting to watch.

Second year in a row Flacco has had a beautiful go-ahead touchdown pass dropped by his receiver. Last year it was Boldin. Flacco is the most underrated quarterback in recent NFL history. He gets absolutely no help from his receivers. He has 5 or 6 dropped passes a game. He played much better than Brady today who is horrendously overrated.

And the 3rd and 1 play at the end... How did they not call illegal contact/defensive holding/pass interference on the guy who was all-out assaulting Dennis Pitta? Especially after they disregarded an interception by the Ravens because of a "illegal contact". (it wasn't illegal contact. The tight end ran straight into Webb. Webb didn't initiate the contact.)

I was pretty amazed at that result as well!

What happened to the Steelers defence?

Just good ol' Troy Polamalu, the most overrated defensive player in the past decade, not covering any of the field whatsoever because he'd rather have a chance to make a tackle for a loss of a yard. It is a bit ridiculous that Troy Polamalu is less than half as good as Ed Reed but for some reason people try to act like they are in the same category.

The Giants are going to destroy the Patriots. Eli Manning is a much better quarterback than Tom Brady. He has much better receivers. And a much better defense.

Wish us luck here in Indianapolis in our hosting duties. The winter has been pretty mild so the preparations went well.

Welcome to the Patriots, Giants, and all of their fans! I hope you have a great time here in Indy.

Actually, I would say the Patriots have the better receivers. Welker and the two tight ends they have are amazing.

The Superbowl will come down to the Patriots offensive line vs the Giants defensive line. The Giants defense relies on getting pressure with just their four lineman. If they have to blitz, it'll leave them vulnerable to short passes and will give the Patriots the chance to win.

Maybe this is because I watch more NFC games than AFC, but I thougth Welker WAS a tight end...

From the angle I saw, the receiver didn't drop the pass and the defense didn't knock it out of his hands until after he had control in the end zone. I was incensed with the refs for the blown call.

Absolutely true. And now that Vollmer is coming back I like the Pats' chances. Granted, he's likely to be a little rusty but he gives the offense more options - like more ability to run Hernandez out of the backfield or maybe even Welker on the end around.

Heard an interesting stat the other day - this is the only indoor game the Patriots have played all season. I don't know if that counts for anything but it's pretty neat.

Remember that Gronskowski has a high ankle sprain. He will be AT BEST 65 percent.

There is no question that Victory Cruise, Hakeem Nicks, and Mario Manningham are better than Wes Welker, Deion Branch, and Ochocinco.

You are right though. The game will be decided in the trenches. It almost always is. But Eli Manning will make superhuman plays when the game is on the line. Brady won't. Eli makes superhuman plays when he is pressured. Brady breaks down and will at times throw ridiculous interceptions just so he doesn't have to get hit. Which is why it is so stupid the Ravens didn't blitz him at all last week. They would've slaughtered them if they would have. But for some reason they played coverage.

And they somehow missed the defender flat-out molesting Dennis Pitta for the entirety of the route the next play. It was simultaneously illegal contact, defensive holding, and defensive pass interference. Yet the ref missed calling any of them.

Tom Brady choked. Back to back plays on the penultimate drive he had receivers very open and probably would've won the Super Bowl if he threw good passes on either, but he threw terrible passes for both. Yes Wes Welker really should've caught the ball, but the ball could have been so so much better and probably a touchdown with a good pass. The second one to Branch was really bad too. He could've hit him in stride for a touchdown.

Tom Brady has never had a game-winning touchdown pass in the playoffs.

And Eli Manning is the second best quarterback in the league. (Aaron Rodgers)

It goes:
Aaron Rodgers
Eli Manning
Drew Brees
Joe Flacco
Ben Roethlisberger
Tom Brady

Well, if Peyton Manning comes back he is either 1, 2, or 3.

Brady's receivers should have caught the stupid ball. After all, Brady only hit them in the hands.

Anyone else think that the game was a bore? Except for the last three minutes anyway.

Kudos to the Giants.

Hardly an exciting game. Would have liked a better ending, but so it goes. The Pats played like garbage and didn't deserve to win. Oh well. Maybe next year.

The only thing that would have made it better was to see Springsteen do the halftime show again. Would have made it a perfect day for me.
