Any professional athlete who is not injured or otherwise without a legit excuse for playing, and who turns down an invitation to an all-star game, should have the all-star status stripped from him/her (fan voting or not). Problem solved. Any fan who has to pay All-Star money to see a Some-Stars game should get a partial refund.

I've noticed how in the past few years, it seems more important to some MLB all stars to be selected to the game, rather than to play.

It's like they're spoiled by the honor instead of grateful.

I think part of the problem is that it shouldn't be fan-voted anyway. The MLB All-Star Game, the Pro Bowl (which really needs to cease existing), the NBA All-Star Game... they're all popularity contests as opposed to legitimate honors. Every year you end up with incorrectly chosen starters. The MLB's "Every team has to be represented" rule hasn't helped matters, since teams are overloaded and the real stars only end up playing an inning or two anyway. It's no longer the accolade that it once was. So even if you stripped "All-Star" status from their names it really wouldn't matter to them, unfortunately. The award has been cheapened.

Many contracts have a bonus for being voted to the all-star team, it doesn't say 'play in the all-star game'. Baseball's game has become bloated, close to 90 participants this year with injuries and those not eligible to play (pitchers starting the previous sunday). It is a meaningless game given some weight, not much, by virtue that the winning league has home field advantage in the world series. If it involves the regular season outcome, then 'every team must be represented, every player must take the field' nonsense should be gone, the team rosters reduced and the voting done by players, coaches and designated sports writers. If it's a fanfest, give them what they want, then let the fans vote, allow unlimited substitutions, players can come back into the game, pitch underhand, who cares. But it shouldn't decide anything about the world series. Basketball, football, hockey aren't much different. The NHL has changed it's format for the game numerous times. The only one that ever made sense was decades ago when it was allstars against the defending Stanley Cup champions. When it was a 6 team league, that made sense. Now? Not so much.

I think it shows lack of respect for the fans, who make possible the outrageous salaries these players receive.

Unless they are in the hospital, in traction, they should be required to show up. Even if they don't play.
