View Full Version : July 11-12 AW Outage and Rollback

So the good news is, we're back, folks - with a huge round of applause for SHawkins, who has been a serious hero all day long.

So the less-good news is that we had to roll back a few days, to get things to stabilize...so we lost some data. You'll notice you're missing some rep comments, some posts, and there will likely be several new members who'll have to re-register again.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and the lost data. I'm very glad you're here, folks, and I intend to let the mods know we'll just have to go on a repping spree to make it up to you.

Welcome home, everyone -- and if you see SHawkins around the boards, buy him a beer and say thank you!

I also want to thank everyone who has been so terrific about helping spread the word, this last day or so, while we were down. You guys are the best group of people I've ever seen collected in a single community, and I deeply appreciate the assist.

I'll buy him a beer, but I won't speak to him...

I'm too young to buy him a beer. What's a suitable substitute?

Thanks for getting the boards up. Too bad about the reps, though!

I was wondering if I can be bumped so I can post in SYW? I had over a hundred posts erased and now I'm back to 9. I had one query and one chapter of my MS up.

haha this is sad, I just registered, so now everything I'd customized is gone

MacAllister

Missesdash, I'm so sorry about the data loss. Yes, I will absolutely go and bump your post count right now -- and if you need any help with the customizations, let me know how I can be of assistance!

I lost some posts too... I was somewhere around 45... so close to being able to post in SYW, and I've tried to get my post count up thoughtfully, over time, by giving detailed feedback to other people in SYW, not just randomly making comments here and there. I notice I'm down to 27 or 28 now, is there any way to get some of those missing ones back? If not, I know this wasn't your fault and you've done a great job getting it going again so quickly, so I won't tear all my hair out! :)

We'll artificially bump you.

Please give the server a chance to catch up though, at least an hour.

And remember that the password for SYW is vista.

I feel your pain, Jersey Chick. I lost mah Susie reps, too. Over the past three days it was almost as if I'd won the rep lottery. It's not the points I miss so much—though I did lose a lot—it's the lovely comments I'll miss.

See, what happens with both my dog and my brother's dog (both are black Labs) is that they would eat the edible part and spit out the pill that's hidden in the bread/meat/whatever. Curse the Labradors for their intelligence! It's inconvenient sometimes.

===

Dunno if this is useful, but: Word from Another Forum[tm] that uses the same software, and gets millions of hits, so it really gets exercised... [checking stats... Threads: 1,156,811, Posts: 19,217,231, Members: 1,194,075 .. and any average member has been "viewed" upward of a million times] -- it has a tendency to develop Database Issues once a given thread gets into the thousands of posts range (leading to a policy of restarting a thread as Part II as of about 1000 posts). And I've noticed here at AW, that after a thread gets up around 200 pages (if not before) it also often loses track of what is your own "new post" and tends to be off by a page or two. Shorter threads don't have this issue.

Ergo

Sorry to have lost my post count (bump back to 50 would be a blessing) :-)

Thank god for that, I was getting a little shaky.

It is sad to have lost some of the threads I was on- especially the deceased authors thread where I was getting lots of good advice over legality of selling my uncles work. But, I'd rather have it gone and the forum back rather than no AW.

My, without AW I might have to... write all day!

hmmm .. nice job in recovery. Thank you for the time and effort

seem to remember this happening from time to time on Air Force Enlisted Forums, which uses the same forum software.

I just wrote an e-mail to you last night asking if you would recommend using this package (which one of their products are you using) I'm planning on setting up a family genealogy forum and, over-all, I like this forum from the users' view.

I'd love to hear what you have to day ... maybe in a PM, if you would not rather air out some things in this format

Alan, he's exploring the joys of eating heart-healthy.

i suspect that his computer skills pale in comparison his cooking though!

he and i discussed a non-heart healthy braised short rib recipe (that i was making for new years eve) this past dec.

i recieved rave reviews on the short ribs. in fact, it was declared that i was to make them every nye until the end of time. i can tell you that this was all due to shawkins suggestions and guidance. the man can cook.

Nope Nothing to do with the Google +1 thingy -- it was part of the lost data from the rollback, is all.

And probably I won't bother putting it back up, either -- although I'm a little tempted to look at putting it into the post template.
what is this google + thingy you speak of?

THANKS for all that you do Mac and Lisa and Shawkins and all.

Haggis, your avatar is most disturbing.

This is better than, when was it? 2007? We lost the whole month of June. I still maintain I posted my most brilliant posts ever that month. ;) SOme people looked up things in the Google Cache and we recreated some important threads. Is that something that is possible again? I didn't participate as I am not computer savvy.

Thank you SHawkins for getting the board back up.

Still, I'm very depressed right now because I lost a post that I really did not want to lose.

I posted a link asking people to read a sample chapter, and received one particularly well-appreciated comment that I am now kicking myself for not copying somewhere. Before the rollback, I sent a private message to that poster asking if he could post that same comment on my blogsite.

Is the private message I sent to him now gone as well? I really hope not because I don't remember his name... only his avatar. Is there is any way at all to retrieve a deleted post or message? Please say yes!

Not really, no.

However, if you or he have PMs sent to mail you might be lucky.

I would start a new thread in SYW with the name of your work asking for Previous Critters to help you out.

Small problem, perhaps, but before the calamity I had a permissible total of 200 private messages (I'm a contributor), and now it's down to 150 permissible messages.

Another small problem: I had been using animated GIFs in my signature, and they're not permitted anymore. Don't know if that's an accident or intentional.

However, congrats to SHawkins and Mac and others on managing what was obviously a monstrous situation!

It's no biggie though, I can just re-message them and tell them I didn't receive the last message.

Thanks for all your hard work!

I lost one post. :D Apparently, this was a "good" time to not be on AW much...*

I actually didn't panic. I almost did. I tried AW and got a page of white and techno-sounding error messages and I almost panicked, but decided that I'd wait a few days and if AW was still down, *then* I could panic.

Hey, wait a sec... AW's on Twitter? AND Facebook? Why didn't I know this? (Um. Yeah. Don't answer that...) Another good reason to start checking the Twitter account I haven't actually... er... used. At all. I'm soooo not social media-y.

Also, I already knew Mac and Medi were teh bomb-diggetiest AW superheroes, but now I get to add SHawkins to that list. Cool. (I'm not sure I was even alive when "bomb-diggety" was an actual used term. I'm not sure it ever *was* an actual used term. Huh. I wonder if that means I'm a nerd, or just really, really weird. Or both.)

I am sooooooooooo glad AW was fixed before I panicked. I really, really didn't want to panic. I can't deal with panic right now, dangit! O.0

*not that there's ever a "good" time for such...

ETA: Also, Medi, the browser-preference-text-size thing also helped me. I'd noticed a text-size change awhile ago, but never figured out why--must have been when I switched over to Firefox. You iz a lifesaver!!!!1!

...is it just me, or am I babbling more than usual today? :tongue
