I've dipped my hands into fantasy inspired westerns before, and I have some key troubles in defining the mysticism of the old west. Although writing this genre isn't my specialty, my experience in high fantasy, swords and sorcery, etc. has bloated my ego enough to assure me I can write shamans (or others of their ilk) on the frontier. Any useful suggestions/beatings?

Which Gold Rush? California in '49 or the Klondike in '98? Or any of the many smaller ones that littered the history of the Old West in the 1800's?
There's the Native Americans, trying to keep their land, gold-miners from around the world, and all the hangers-on. Each with their own magic systems. Alchemists and faux-alchemists could make a fortune, faking claims.
I think the 'mysticism', magic arts, etc, would be chiefly dedicated to finding gold. Really, if you wanted peaceful contemplation, you'd want to be somewhere other than a place where all thought is focussed on one really material thing.
