Does anybody have any advice or experience on using book design/formatting software? I was thinking of giving it a go and using software to get my next book ready for print but after Googling the topic I was met with mind boggling results :-)

Any recommendations/tips on formatting or what software to buy, (also page layout, PDF etc) would be gratefully appreciated.

I use:

For ebooks:
Cover: Visio
Interior: Microsoft Expression to edit HTML directly.

For print books via CreateSpace:
Cover: Photoshop
Interior: Word

I write novels, so no internal images or fancy text layout. Just paragraphs and chapter headers.

GIMP. Free and has most of what Photoshop does.
