Gods damnit I have looked everywhere for this information and I am either losing my googlefu or it isn't easily available online.

I am currently writing a short for the Lost Civilisations anthology competition and need to know a few little things about Vostok ice cores.

If anyone knows anything about these, could you possibly help me find a source of info on the storage temperature of ice cores, and whether the image of a scientist bundled up in layers of sub-zero temperature clothing, shivering despite the layers, huddled over a core measuring the different bands of deposits is realistic.

Would the sort of lab where cores are examined and cut for samples be fairly modern looking- spartan, pristine with neat storage and bright lighting - or are the labs in Antarctica going to look more rough-edged- old, worn metal shelving and walls, poor lighting with possibly a better light positioned where work is carried out, old stuff due to the difficulty of getting new equipment to site.

Oh! Also, for those who live in wayyyy colder climates than my relatively mild little island. I know what "really cold" to my perspective feels like when you're stuck in it for a long time, but what does longterm subzero cold feel like?

Ooh, thank you!
