Perhaps not the MOST impressive haul, but my garden is all of 5 foot square, concrete, with 2-storey high walls on 3 sides, so I consider any produce a success!

I am currently growing peas, beans, courgettes, potatoes, redcurrants, olives, blueberries, redcurrants, strawberries, aubergines, peppers, almonds, figs, tomatoes and LOADS of herbs. Pictured above is what I took out of the garden today and includes

  • one cupful courgettes the size of a finger
  • one cupful peapods
  • a few courgette flowers
  • one cupful of redcurrants, the entire crop from my tiny bush this year
  • fresh bay leaves and wild rosemary from my mum's and nan's gardens
  • caraway, sweet fennel, parsley, coriander, oregano, chocolate mint, sage and lavender from my own garden.
Of course the big question is, what do I cook with it all?

How lovely!

I'm making snap peapods for dinner, steamed 3-4 minutes, then a bit of lemon and butter swirled in once they're drained. Easy, delicious.

I'm not familiar with courgettes. Do they have a different name in the US, do you know?

I'd dry many of the spices for use in baking and stews which seem too heavy this time of year.

Maryn, whose garden is plagued by deer and bunnies--but not you, I hope

I think you guys call them something else.

Erm... zuccini? Maybe? Green proto-squashes that grow up to be marrows if you let them. Tasty sliced thin with lemon and olive oil. They also include big, yellow flowers that you can stuff and batter.

Yup, the beloved zuke! I know a zucchini joke, let me think a minute.

A gardener's zucchini crop, always abundant, provides her with so much more than she can use that she routinely give them away to neighbors as a gesture of good will. One year, the crop is even larger than usual.

Instead of taking four zucchinis to each neighbor as usual, she fills a bushel basket and goes to the first house. She sets down her basket and rings the doorbell. By the time her neighbor answers, she has the usual four zucchinis in her hands to present to the neighbor.

"Oh, my. Four. Thank you."

"It's been a great year for zukes." The gardener gestured at her bushel basket, still brimming. "Take as many as you want."

The neighbor put three back and softly closed the door.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that was a joke suggesting courettes aren't delicious. But that couldn't possibly be true. Because they are.
