I know an agent through a mutual friend, and she read my manuscript.

About a month ago she writes to me that she's "loving this book", and that she's almost done with it but doesn't want it to end. She loves my characters. She'll get back to me once she's done.

I have not heard anything. What's the best way and time to follow-up?

If she was "almost done" a month ago, she should be done by now. I'd do a check-in email asking her if she's finished it yet.

Certainly sounds promising. I guess the 'norm' is waiting 3 months before prodding, but this may be a special situation. Even if she's done and hasn't called you, this could mean she's looking at who/how to sell/market it before she gets back to you.

Everyone always has a different answer to questions like these, and after ruling out the ridiculous, who knows what's right. It so much depends on the personality and business decorum of the agent and your relationship with her. I say wait 2-3 more weeks and then send her a short, brief email query. And only that soon because of what she told you.
