Post a pic or link. A picture's worth a thousand words, right? Let's see if we can't make 'em worth more.

My first entry is of the Chile Volcanic eruption with lightning from last week. It is probably the most amazing, awe-inspiring photo (outside of those Hubble pics) I have ever seen:

What you got?

Cool photo! I don't have anything to share at the moment, but I spend a lot of time going through a Livejournal account called RiotClitShave (it's safe for work, despite the name and barring the occasional artistic or otherwise non-porn nudity). The woman who runs it posts all sorts of really cool pics she finds on the internet. She's got hundreds of pics there and some of them defy description.

Actually, Diana, the photo you show isn't from the eruption of last week. It's from a spectacular eruption of a different Chilean volcano (Chaiten) three years ago. A series of amazing pics were posted then, several of which you can see here:

Lightning commonly is generated by violent ash clouds, and has been widely documented in other eruptions, including Pinatubo in 1989 and Redoubt, Alaska, in 2009:

But the Chaiten photos are the most spectacular I've ever seen.

Dang it! Oh well, thanks for the correction and links!

This isn't strictly current events, but this page has a link to a bunch of winners of the 2011 International Photo Contest. Night sky pictures -- some just beauty shots, some are also quite beautiful, but taken to show the effects of light pollution.
