Articles like this show how society is becoming more accepting of gender non-conformity, which can only be a good thing.

What exactly is gender, anyway? Sometimes the very concept baffles me.

I had a professor at UMass Amherst who did a fantastic class tackling this exact question. He showed us all kinds of ways that media teaches gender roles; mostly in how it portrays each sex. I wrote my senior thesis paper on "The Millennium Series" and how Lisbeth Salander pretty much debunks all of these. If you haven't read The Girl with the Dragon tattoo, I highly recommend it. Not only is the story fantastic, but Larsson created such an awesome character (Lisbeth) and she calls into question all sorts of things about gender and sexuality.
