Welcome to the June Flash Fortnight!

The June Flash Fortnight (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213125) will run from Wednesday 15th June (Day 1) to Tuesday June 28th (Day 14). Each morning during the challenge, I'll update this post with a new prompt for the day, so please check back if you find them useful! All of the challenge prompts will remain permanently available to you, so if you'd like to use any of them outside of the Fortnight, please feel free to do so.

Tips on using the prompts

Think of the prompt as a starting point. When you look at it, certain words, phrases or ideas might immediately come to your mind. Try writing these down. For each of these things, consider what words, phrases or ideas that they, in turn, inspire.

Keep going in this way. You could free associate on the thoughts you're getting, or ask yourself questions on each thing: What is it about this that I'm drawn to? What would happen if I followed this train of thought to its logical conclusion?

Try not to censor yourself or second-guess your imagination. In the end, the idea you end up with might be completely unrelated to the prompt - and that's completely fine!

Good luck!

Optional: Signature art!

Here are some images that you are welcome to use in your post signatures, if you wish, to mark your achievements in each challenge. They indicate the total number of days during the Flash Fortnight on which you've completed a story draft. There are 14 images available, one for each day.

You can update your signature with a single new image each day, or put one image up at the end of the challenge; however you prefer.

The images are currently hosted on Photobucket. To add them to your signature:

Go to your User CP (the left-most link in the blue menu bar that is near the top of every page);
Click on the Edit Signature link from the list on the left of the page;
Paste the URL into the signature box, preceded by and followed by ;
Click on Save Signature.

The URLs of the images are all in this form:

http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/elarasophia/AW%20Flash%20Fiction%20Forum/1.jpg

Right-click on the link and copy it, and then edit the 1.jpg at the end to the number you would like (e.g. 10.jpg) after you paste the URL into your signature box.

But there's more!

You can also choose a signature picture from this second set of images, which was very kindly created by Williebee (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/member.php?u=15081):

http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/elarasophia/AW%20Flash%20Fiction%20Forum/W1.png http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/elarasophia/AW%20Flash%20Fiction%20Forum/W8.png http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/elarasophia/AW%20Flash%20Fiction%20Forum/W14.png

Again, there are images available for each day of the challenge. The URLs for these are all in this form:

http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad65/elarasophia/AW%20Flash%20Fiction%20Forum/W1.png

Right-click on the link and copy it, and then edit the W1.png at the end to the number you would like (e.g. W14.png) after you paste the URL into your signature box.

I'm going to actually have to try this. Granted, I found out about the May challenge on the 29th, so I was a little late haha. This time though, I'm all in!

I think I'll give it a shot even though I've never written flash fiction before.

I don't feel like I'll make it every day, though I'll try. I'll be happy if I end up with a few worthwhile shorts in the next couple of weeks. I'm in!

Ooh, cool prompt! I don't know if I'll be able to do this every day, but I want to at least give it a shot. That prompt has me thinking at least. =)

I'm psyched! Too bad it's already 930 and I haven't written a word.

Lillie
06-16-2011, 10:55 PM
Well, I done the first one, but I have no ideas for the second.

I live in Wales... What the hell do I know about New Orleans????

(Probably as much as Sophia, who is also from the UK. And I've read Anne Rice, so I've been there in my imagination... Lol)

Sophia

I did wonder if it was too specific. It's based on a line from Dylan's Tangled Up in Blue. I liked the image of spending a summer working your way down a coast, through small towns, using rural roads and railways, and thought it might suggest some stories of encounters, events, or the character of someone who might do that.

Lillie

:)

No worries. I was only joking.

I'm writing it already.

I have an imaginary New Orleans that I've visited rather than a real one, but it's all good. I like a challenge.

I thought prompt #1 said distress signal not distress flare. Oh well, I'm still writing mine. It's kind of weird so far ha ha.

Sophia
06-17-2011, 06:34 PM
Signal or flare, both work. :) There's no rule about taking the prompts literally. Substitute other words for ones that don't do anything for you, go off on a tangent, or ignore the prompt completely!

Just checking in to say that number 2 is done.

Rather liked it in the end.

Yay, Lillie! Great work!

I live in Wales... What the hell do I know about New Orleans????

In all fairness, it wasn't specified where this particular New Orleans is. Maybe it's on the moon. Or Mars. Or it's a newly colonized planet... :P

Lillie
06-18-2011, 12:21 PM
Lol, I never thought of that.

New New Orleans, under a dome, drifting down the river to the Sea of Tranquillity.

L M Ashton
06-18-2011, 12:22 PM
That's plausible enough. :)

Hey, what can I say? I'm science fiction girl. This is what I do. :D

Lillie
06-18-2011, 12:24 PM
I ended up doing an S&M story on a river boat, cos that's the sort of girl I am...

I wish I'd noticed this earlier. I'll try to do a few! It might even help get me back on track on my longer works in progress.

Lillie

Checking in.

Up to date.

That last one was so difficult. Just couldn't think of anything.

Sophia
06-20-2011, 01:44 PM
Welcome, clintl! :hi: I've found these challenges to be good when I'm stalled on my novel WIPs - they seem to remind my brain that it can actually write, and it seems to relax and get past its stumbling block afterwards. Good luck!

Lillie - go, go, go!

Yay. 6 was a good one. Not only did I get a story that can be rendered down to a nice bit of flash, but I also got the bare bones plan for something longer.

faerydancer
06-22-2011, 12:39 AM
Well I am just royally sucking at getting any of these done. Though #3 has given me an outline for a longer story and #4 is nagging at my brain and saying, "there's something here!" I like the idea of a New Orleans in space, L M Ashton, btw =)

Sophia
06-22-2011, 12:50 AM
Heh, I like that idea, too. :)

If one day (or two days, or every day) doesn't work out, then put your pen down or step away from the keyboard, and chalk it up to experience. You tried, and it didn't work for you. It doesn't mean anything except that you've tried something and discovered that this day, it wasn't the prompt for you. It could all be different tomorrow. Even if every single day of every challenge doesn't work out, it could still be different the next day. Keep trying. It might be that you need to approach it differently, or it might be that some days the ideas won't come no matter what you do. You won't know until you try. One day, something will click, and you'll have discovered a new approach through this trial and error that does work for you. And then, it's cake time!

Just checking in.

Caught up with myself. Rather like a couple of the recent ones.
Thanks.

Great going, Lillie!

How are other people doing? It's been a bit quiet this month. I hope that if you've participated, you've got a few openings or ideas out of the challenge.

I've been following along, but haven't been able to participate that much this month.

I've got the prompts copied into text files in a June FF folder and am picking away at them, day by day, adding words, trying out new ideas. Some are first-draft finished but begging for more work, or are just too corny to live. :)

I discovered this kind of late, but two of those prompts spoke to me so I'm currently working on stories inspired by them.

Hope to catch the next FF Fortnight!
Congrats to all of you who've been working this challenge. :)

Lillie
06-29-2011, 12:52 AM
Well, I'm done.

I've written something for all of them, most aren't up to much, but there are a couple I might be able to do things with.

I found these much harder than last month. I don't know why.

Thanks Sophia.

Well, this month was a bust for this challenge for me. But I've copied down all the prompts and wrote notes for several. I have the start of a story for, "In the home of an absent or missing woman." I feel like I have stories in me for several of these prompts but other ideas are just more pressing right now. Maybe next month will be more productive for this challenge.

Update.

I've just had the story I wrote for Day 10 (Sacred) accepted by Eschatology.

Yay!

That's fantastic, Lillie. Congratulations! :)

Thank you!

That's two sales of mine that have come from the Flash Challenge, two stories that wouldn't exist without your prompts :)
