...why I've suddenly got frickin' Bon Jovi Bad Medicine stuck in my head?

Because it's effectively just a "little ditty".

Listen to something by Mozart or Bach for five minutes.

I got this stuck in my head a couple of months ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3kQlzOi27M

I think it's called Last Song Syndrome (LSS).

The Germans call it an "earworm," I've heard.

I get rid of them by focusing on all the actual sounds around me.

But I haven't even listened to this song for years!

And I'm at work, so I can't wipe it out with Mozart or Bach.

So take a moment to focus, very carefully, on the sounds of work around you. It doesn't matter what you listen to, just so you listen to reality.

You need to concentrate on sending me an email, or at the very least a PM!

I suspect I'm fortunate that YouTube is blocked at work...

Snitch - I'll get right on that. :)

No youtube? You should strike for better conditions.

In the meantime: One banana, two banana, three banana four, four bananas make a bunch and so do many more. La la la, lala la la...

Take one down, pass it around
98 bottles of beer on the wall

98 bottles of beer on the wall . . .

Earworm. That word is so satisfying. But creepy.

If you can't get rid of it start making up your own lyrics.

Not to be confused with an earwig . . .

I haven't seen an earwig for years. Have they died out?

Eurgh, no. We've had a wet spring and they're all over our garden.

And it is not nice to suggest dreadful songs to people who have trouble getting them out of their heads. Be kind.

So, you've got earwigs in Chicago. But I'm in England....

We used to get them in the house a lot. I wonder if it's anything to do with houses not being as damp as they used to be.

I still see earwigs (mostly in the garden) but you know what I haven't seen in years? Silverfish.

And for Jimmy, who is home from work by now and can see youtube, I present this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8CIDdKvUkg). If that don't clear Bon Jovi from your lugholes, you're doomed.

Noooo!

It's a pretty awful earworm, I'll admit. But you can't put me on ignore - I gave you a happy ending and a hot chick!

Hmm, I could give you a better earworm? Queen?

You appear to have galloping AOR-itis. I suggest listening to fey late-eighties indie until the threat recedes.

Rick Astley

Sorry, I shall control myself. You now, The Verve, All About Eve, Cowboy Junkies (er, well they were late eighties...)

I feel like a bit of an All About Eve kick myself. 'She was a wild-hearted woman...'

The "You what" was directed at Priene. I've no idea what he meant. Luckily for you, my mouse handling skills are quick enough that I managed to close the Astley tab before I got any whiff of his 'singing'.

You what?

In short, you're getting old and you need to listen to something that wouldn't have been played in a 1980s wine bar.

I figured - and did you? Lucky escape. This time. I shall stalk you and hound you and...

No, I won't. I'm not sure what would have played in an 80's wine bar. Going in one would have meant I was a class traitor. I could have been on that slippery slope: hankering after pine kitchens, sleeping on futons, eating tappas! Who knows where it could have lead? I could have started having "relationships" with people instead of going out with them. Got married, got on the property ladder. God Almighty, who knows where it could have ended? Next thing you know, I'm playing squash every Tuesday night with a bloke called Gerald!
