Every time I tried researching this, I hit a dead end.

My novel is set Roman Britain, the basic plot is that my protaganist has been sent to capture a centurion who has deserted his command. So, my protaganist is involved in a chase/pursuit through the Caledonian forest.

I have no clue how to go about having my character track his quarry. Any ideas of resources I could go to?

You came to the right place. Chase is the name; chasing my game. Just kidding.

Maybe this will give you an idea:

I volunteered 36 years to Montana's Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks. I'm a fair tracker, but the wardens I worked with could track a caterpillar over lava rock and fish through the river.

Everything leaves signs. Reading them is an art not quickly learned, but the URL should point the way to further research.

Thanks. I was starting to get frustrated.

I owe you a drink. :)
