I think the casting of Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury in the forthcoming film is brilliant.

Absolutely perfect for the role, can't wait to see it.

The very tall Sacha Baron Cohen as Lord Freddie of Mercury? They'll need to find a basketball player to stand in for Professor May.

Agreed. I have nothing against Cohen. He could very well do an amazing job. I've only ever seen him do caricatures, so I don't know. And I realize they think his popularity will raise viewership.

But I would think the fact that it's about The Freddie is enough to draw people. They seriously can't find someone of Persian or Indian heritage who kind of resembles Freddie with the skill to play him? I'll bet they could if they bothered to look.

I hope Cohen does an admirable job, because I'm a lifelong Queen fan. I'm already chagrined at the casting, so I'll feel extremely let down if he stinks or they make it a farce. Freddie was such a huge talent. I listen to Night at the Opera and am awed still to this day. He was a fascinating person, and I hope they let that come through.

Personally I don't care for a positive portrayal of a convicted paedophile, but...meh. Cohen is a good actor. So...yay?

Wha...wait, Freddy Mercury?

A convicted pedophile!?

That...

What!?

The dude was bisexual, not a pedophile, last time I checked.

Think you may be confusing him with some turd like Gary Glitter.

Fred simply was not a peado,

Thats a slur on greatness.

I don't either.

So it's fortunate that we're talking about Freddie Mercury instead.

So what gave you this idea? Do you assume that all gay/bisexual men are guilty of sex crimes? I dont think one of the most beloved singers of modern day would have such a fanbase if he were guilty of such crimes.

Let's relax for a sec. I think there's a good chance she confused Freddie with Gary Glitter.

Yeah, I'm betting that's the case, too. :)

FWIW, I'm not a fan of Cohen (never seen his work), so I don't know what to expect here. But I *really* hope they don't screw this up.

I wouldn't worry about the height with today's camera techniques. The 6' 8" Brad Garrett pulled off playing the much shorter (5' 9") Jackie Gleason in a TV movie a few years back.

Going the other way, the director of Walk the Line had no trouble making 5' 8" Joaquin Phoenix look like 6' 2" Johnny Cash.

Joaquin Phoenix. (His brother was River Phoenix.)

I honestly don't remember Gary Glitter. Apparently he was convicted in the U.K. of possessing child pornography (which shouldn't even be a crime, but is pretty disgusting), then later was expelled from Cambodia for unstated reasons, then convicted of molesting little girls in Viet Nam. Yikes; no, not somebody I'd want to be confused with.

Manuel Royal, i think you should read very carefully when you state, possessing child pornography should not be a crime.
In my book and i think you'll find in a lot of others, that sympathisers in this kind of thing is tantamount to approving their dispicable activities.

OH GOODNESS. I was drunk and confused him with Gary Glitter. My sincere bad. Note to self: keep away from kneejerk reactions when inebriated. I'll now go do a few hail Marys. Sorry folks.

Think maybe there's a connection there? Maybe? Just slightly? (Opinion follows here) Child porn is the most heinous crime mankind has ever created. (Please note that this is my opinion.) It tortures and breaks innocence forever. I'm generally a weenie nonviolent person, but I would gladly disembowel its perpetrators (and the kind of people that buy it) and leave them in a garbage dump to die.

I am so furious and disgusted and appalled that I can't see straight.

Mr. Royal, I'm putting you on Ignore forever.

And on a much, much lighter note: Cohen isn't the person who came to mind thinking of casting Mercury, but hey, ya never know.

I, too, would prefer to see Freddie Mercury portrayed by someone of middle-Eastern or Indian descent, although I don't think Mercury was overly proud of his origins. Many people don't even realize he was the son of Parsis.

After some thought, I believe Cohen could do a decent job. He's a fine British actor, and would at least have the accent right.

Baron Cohen is a very versatile actor, he has the full backing of the three surviving members of Queen.

To get the backing of Roger Taylor is surely a big seal of approval too.

Its not a film about just Freddie, its about the band in their heyday, up to Live aid.

Possibly my fault as i started the thread with the title "Freddie Mercury Film".

Its all well saying you should find an Indian or Middle Eastern actor, but can one who could portray the great man be found or even exist.

I think Baron Cohen will do a fine job, i wait with baited breath for the release.

Ps I'm with you Callailly61, agree with every word, its beyond words. Royal your .....

I don't like SBC or his movies, but that's because I don't like the way Borat was made (not a fan of the mockumentary). However, I know there are plenty of people who believe he's an excellent actor, so I hope they know what they're talking about.

Freddie had one of the best voices ever gifted to a person, and thankfully we all got to share in that gift.

Wow. You do realize that the reason you rarely see us/uk films with indian/indian-american/indian-english headliners is NOT that the actors "don't exist". There are many in the us and the uk, and you do realize that in India roughly a bizillion movies are made every year starring...Indian actors (gasp). And they look like an actual person of color, as opposed to looking like a half-welsh-half-jewish comfortingly white dude.
