eww! JK.

I read an article a while back about this woman who was in a prison in the middle east (I think, might've been asia) and she (all the women actually) were abused sexually, mentally, and physically.

She also said that the guards use to put ______ the the women's tea to stop them from menstruating.

I can't remember what the thing was that was added.
It was not a pharmaceutical but something like opium or dandelions or rose hips...

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance for you help!

I don't know the article, but could it be bakula?

Fruit of Bakula is made into a paste by grinding it with alcohol. It will stop menstruation, if taken during the period of menstruation.

Bitter dock is another possibility

One report says that the root has been used as a contraceptive to stop menstruation.

There are loads of herbs that have been traditionally taken to regulate menstruation, lighten a period, bring on irregular periods and deal with the pain, but I'm not aware of any herbs that reliably stop menstruation. The above was taken from a single online source and neither is a herb I'm familiar with.

Though not an herb, you can stop menstruation by taking the pill w/o the placebo.

That's bad for your endocrine system, though.

Soy can actually influence the cycle. (It acts like estrogen, which is why guys + tofu = not the best combo.)

Licorice root and blue or black cohash I know can induce miscarriages, but I'm not sure if they can affect menstruation.

miscarriage induction could be relevant too. I don't remember exact what she said they did... I remember is as stopping menstruation but it could have been that. I'll google those also. (scary how people discover these thing though...)

I hate that I can't even remember the woman's basic facts. just that she ended up living happily with a husband and children in Canada and working for women's rights.

There are a ton of herbs that have been identified as abortifacients through the centuries—that's why tea can have warning labels on it for pregnant and nursing mothers.

What's scary is how long it's been known, and how much has been forgotten by the general population. More than one lover of licorice root tea has rediscovered that info the hard way. (And I've read that pennyroyal was a popular one in Victorian era Great Britain, but that's a poison that can easily kill the woman, so I suspect it was mainly popular in the social strata that didn't talk about sex.)

Try looking up "herbal abortifacients". I remember the licorice root tea because I'm fond of it, myself, and the blue/black cohash because I've used it in a story. Er, and the pennyroyal. Used that in a story, too.

Thank you! very helpful. "herbal abortifacients" is a better search term than "tea period stop herb" :)

Really? I drank coffee from morning to night all the time I was pregnant. No alcohol, though.

And by definition, you didn't menstruate :)

Edited: Oh, wait, are we talking abortions now? I think I got confused. Anyway, very high caffeine consumption is associated with a higher miscarriage risk but would hardly be a reliable way to induce miscarriage.

But you never OD-ed on coffee (I'm guessing you have a quite high tolerance). I'm talking about actual, clinical ODing, not just drinking a lot. I.e. tremoring, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, etc.

ETA: I'm talking about stopping menstruation, sorry for the confusion.

Just a thought, but heavy amounts of stress will affect a woman's cycle. As will extreme physical exercise and very poor nutrition. From what you said these women went through, it may have been a combination of things that stopped their periods.
