Last night my sweet dog died. He was a retired racing greyhound, and although his first three years were hell, the rest were spent with us, a family who loved him like our own child.

I'm grateful to have had him in my life, but I'm grateful he's not in pain any more. It's been a long haul of sleepless nights and medication experiments.

My favorite memory is of Lex playing hide and go seek with the kids. Even though he was 76 pounds, he somehow thought that if he crammed his head into the closet with my little girl, we couldn't see him. We'd say "We see you!" and his tail would wag like crazy and the girl would giggle. A little thing, but such a perfect memory.

If you have your own sweet dog at home, will you give them a hug for me?

I'm so sorry, heyjude. My sympathies to you and your family. It hurts to lose one of our 'fur babies'.

What a good memory, but so sorry for your loss. I know he's been ill for awhile. You just made me tear up reading that. *HUGS* And I'll give my sweet doggie a hug for you, too.

I'm so sorry. It's always so very hard. But I'm glad that he found you; his life was much better than it would have been.

Aww Jude what a sweet memory- it is so hard to say goodbye- we go into the relationship with our pets knowing we will say goodbye first- but that knowledge does not make it any easier. My heart goes out to you.:Hug2:

:Hug2: Greyhounds are such great dogs.

I had a nice walk at sunset with my pup today and we got to spend some time just enjoying life.

I bet Lex is up there tearing it up and frolicking in the tall grass.

Losing a dog is like losing a piece of your heart. But take solace in knowing you gave him a wonderful life (and he gave you equal in return).

I just gave my dogs a hug for you/him. And I'll light a candle. http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=aw

Focus on the happy memories. I made scrapbooks when I lost my two senior rescue pups (it was rewarding to 'retrace' their time with me), and I planted a rose for each of them.

I don't think anyone said it better than Lord Byron: http://www.dogquotations.com/epitaph-to-a-dog-by-lord-byron.html

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a DOG,
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18, 1808....

I'm so sorry, Jude. I wish our furry family members could live as long as we do so that we wouldn't have to lose them so soon. :Hug2:

My dog is back home on the other side of the mountains, but I will make sure to give my brother's dog a big hug when I visit them this weekend.

Sorry for your loss. I lost mine in 2008.

A goldfish is a pet, but a dog is a family member. So sad.

So sorry Jude. It is always hard to lose them, even when their quality of life is slipping.

But at least you won't have to sleep on the floor any longer :Hug2:

Thanks, everyone. :) Today is much better. We're much more peaceful.

Yesterday I told one of the moms at school and she said "Oh. You should get a puppy. I have a puppy you could buy." Did you hear me scream? :D

We still have our two older cats, one of whom is severely arthritic and diabetic. It's going to be a rough year for animals.

I can't read threads like this without crying. I lost my first pair of cats eleven years ago and though I now have another pair, the loss of the first has not diminished.

:Hug2:

But, I'm glad you have great fun memories of your furry friend.
