Recently there've been a lot of popular science books about “male brains” and “female brains,” with the theory (well, a simplified version of it) being that the former are better at spatial reasoning/analytical tasks and the latter are better at language/empathy tasks. Most of the books tend to discuss it in connection to sex rather than gender and seem very cisgender-focused, but I think they’ve also done studies on transgender people and found that their brain types tend to align more with their gender than their birth sex.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/add_user.shtml

This test is supposed to measure what type of brain you have by giving you various tasks to perform. I don’t know how accurate it is, but I’m just curious what other people think of this whole concept.

I came out somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, though leaning toward the “male” side. I guess that fits, but I also know several people who took the test and got results that didn’t reflect their gender identity. One friend of mine remarked that it seemed to be more about thinkers and feelers (in the Myers-Briggs sense) than males and females. Thoughts?

Well, I got conflicting results. My bar score told me 50% into the male region, but most of my numerical scores that were detailed below came out on the side of female. *shrug*

One thing I did notice was that a lot of the little notes talked about testosterone and estrogen - and in general, a trans woman such as myself who hasn't taken any hormone therapy is going to have too much testosterone. Naturally this will affect the idea of "male or female brain" because it's about the hormones you naturally have, as opposed to an actual male/female nature.

I did think there were elements of thinker/feeler in there, but on the whole the test seemed to be trying to identify male and female traits.

I don't think I'd ever score entirely female on that test, simply because I have a history in science, which was noted in the results as something that will affect some results. (Namely, the last question thing had the result range 10-12 (the maximum) with the words "Are you an engineer?" in the "male" range of the results.)

And one inconsistency I noted was in the face preferences.

Basically, I was asked initially whether I preferred men or women sexually. I chose women. Then in the results, it spoke about how women tend to prefer masculine faces prior to ovulation. Whether this is ignoring the fact that I could be a lesbian, or whether it's ignoring the fact that I could be a trans woman who doesn't have an ovarian cycle, I don't know... But I thought that demonstrated how imperfect tests like these will be.

...

Thanks for the link. I enjoy fun little tests like that, even if I don't read too much into the results. (Hooray for scepticism!)

I also scored 50% on the male side, the average score for a guy. And it told me I prefer masculine faces. Apparently I am a lesbian with the brain of a gay dude scientist. I think I deserve a cookie. :D

Actually, from what I've read, these gender tendencies are not necessarily related to transsexual-related gender tendencies. Some trans women are good at the "male" stuff, some at the "female" stuff, some a little of both. Same for cis women, trans men, cis men, and genderqueer/intergender-identified people.

I do think there's such a thing as brain sex, but I think the only important part is that tiny bit that determines whether you want to be seen as male or female. And when these other things, stereotypes mostly, get tied to transsexualism or the concept of brain sex, it makes it harder for people to accept us because they think being transsexual is about stereotypes. (And it makes trans people who fit the opposite stereotype as their gender identity feel bad too.)

That was a fascinating quiz. I scored smack dab in the middle, which didn't surprise me. What did surprise me was that I scored very high in both a male test (angles) and a female test (eyes), which is weird. I guess I have a well-balanced brain?

I'va always been told that I think like a man, but have no plans whatsoever for transgender surgery or inclinations of that sort.

I think the "nurture" part also plays a significant role, and we can't write everything off to DNA.

I scored 50% on the female side. Way for me to promote stereotypes about gay men being feminine! It does explain why I relate to women (friends, authors, singers) better than men, despite the whole being-attracted-to-dudes thing.

I still comfortably identify as a cisgendered male.

The spatial test is the same one from the ASVAB test (entry test for the airforce).

Oh, and I scored 25% female. To the OP, I agree with your friend. It's a test about thinkers and feelers. I strongly disagree with the idea that you can extend gender labels to these kinds of things. Just because one gender is more likely to think or feel a certain way does not mean they own that way of being. That sort of logic jump could be the cause for the gap in the first place.

Yeah, it's an interesting little set of exercises (I was surprised at how well I did on the spatial stuff, myself), but I'm not inclined to see it as any meaningful statement about my gender. Gender is such a personal and subjective thing, I doubt anyone will ever make a test that can measure it with complete accuracy.

as someone who believes in gender equality, I believe there is no difference between the intelligence of men and women. The only real difference between men and women is their body structure and reproductive organs.

Differences in brain chemistry don't necessarily impact intelligence.

This was the first test, ever, to tell me that I'm a right brain thinker, so I took everything with a shaker of salt.

I love taking these kinds of tests, but yeah, I put zero stock in the results. I've been meaning to get my hands on that book mentioned earlier, actually.

That said, I scored 50% on the male side.

Hmmm... around 25% toward the male side. I scored very highly for spatial awareness, vocabulary, and ability to judge emotions, but scored low on empathy. I think my finger length test result may have confused the system a bit. Males have longer on average ring fingers than index. In women they are equal. My ring finger is significantly shorter than my index. Just to be awkward.

I do think the whole thing was interesting. I appreciated that they emphasised in the results that "male" and "female" brains vary on a sliding scale, with significant overlap on each side, and that the "male" and "female" as they defined it was simply based on which side of the score different genders fell on average.

Since I'm bi, I took the test twice to give my answers for preferred faces on males and females. Interestingly, when answering for males I rated as preferring more masculine faces. When rating females I thought I was choosing faces that were also more masculine, but the test stated I had chosen more feminine faces. I've always liked attributes I thought were masculine, so I was surprised to find my preferences are so different according to the sex of the person I'm oggling. It didn't seem to effect my final result at all, though. Still around 25% toward male.

Yeah, my ring fingers are slightly shorter than my index fingers. Only by about 1 or 2 mm, but it still gave me a 1.02 score when the averages were in the 0.9x range...

Estrogen and testosterone affect behavior, which strongly suggests that they affect the intellect (not necessarily for better or for worse, either, since there are an almost-unlimited number of ways that links between neurons could form.)

If that's the case, why are there men with breasts and uteruses, and women with penises?

The difference between sexes lies in organ sets. Society hasn't agreed on names or roles for every configuration, but they (organ sets) still create the difference.

That said, there's nothing wrong with the idea of gender equality. All thirty-seven of them are equal.

Very sleepy. Can't lie down without vomiting. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

Apparently I am extremely adept at deciphering a person's correct mood. Well... I live with a person with a mood disorder. I've seen them all.

I did not like the attractiveness test, since it forces you to choose from either men or women. I would've liked to have seen both.

Final score: 50% on the female side. This doesn't surprise me one bit. But I've no clue what it actually means....
