View Full Version : The Eurovision Song Contest 2011 - As It Happens.

Finland: Jeff Brazier look-a-like sings about the environment - badly. Although I quite like the dah-de-dums as they have more meaning than the song itself.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:21 PM
Bosnia-Herzegovina: Uncle Frank has put on his zany suit and stumbled onto stage. A disappointment after the countries excellent 2008 entry by Laka.

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:23 PM
That bloke's got Jedward's hair!

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:25 PM
Denmark: The lovechild of Mcfly, Billy Idol and Sum 41. Enough hairspray to rival Jedwood and the Stray Cats. Graham Norton quite likes this song which is good enough reason for me to declare it a bland dirge. At least they are playing - or pretending to play - their own instruments.

News flash! The singer just started a marathon run around the over sized stage extender. This reporter is unsure whether he will make it back by the songs end.

Spoiler - He made it.

Snap Mirandashell!

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:28 PM
He couldn't finish singing though. Out of breath!

God, this Lithuanian song is terrible.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:29 PM
Lithuania: The first of the single women in overstyled dresses with powerful lungs. Here come the strings!

Political Correctness Alert: The singer is signing her own song - but only for one verse!

Verdict: Missable

I agree, Mirandashell. :)

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:33 PM
Hungary: The singer - like the curtains she is wearing - has seen better days. The song, however, is high energy eurodance. A contender, perhaps?

Sartorial addendum: The backing dancers are literally lit up like xmas trees!

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:36 PM
Oh. My. Lor.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:37 PM
Ireland: Please God, No! Living muppets, accidental puppets and the reason Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh should be be permanently sent abroad. Marionette pop - uncoordinated, cringe making, awful.

Well, I'll be goddamned - I actually like it.*

Serious contenders, methinks.

*In the context of course.

Haha mirandashell - almost exactly the same opening lines. :)

I honestly think the US should join the fray.

Then just about everybody else will be given a good chance at winning because there'd be a mad scramble to vote against the US.

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:39 PM
Harry - What else can you say?

LOL! I keep getting flashes of Father Ted....

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:39 PM
Ben - LOL!

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:41 PM
Sweden: Wowsers! A key and pace change that caught this reporter by surprise. Some lyrical tosh about being popular sung by a man who has clearly never had a problem with being popular.

Sartorial addendum: First appearance of the single glove.

Verdict: Should go down well at G.A.Y

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:42 PM
Harry - What else can you say?

LOL! I keep getting flashes of Father Ted....

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:42 PM
I reckon! Just see that in the clubs.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:45 PM
Estonia: Singers choreographer seems to have mined the deep and unpleasant seam of Clockwork dance moves. Quite a good hook and backing track in this reporters opinion. A middle eight good enough to assuage any boredom.

Backing dancer fact: Enthusiastic.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:46 PM
I honestly think the US should join the fray.

Very true. :)

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:46 PM
Hmmm... very punchable, weren't they?

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:49 PM
Greece: Uh-oh - a rapper. Don't Greece remember what happened to the UK's very own Daz Sampson back in 2006? Double Uh-Oh and Il Divo singer joins the fray!

Pyrotechnic fact: Enough flame to put the first Gulf War to shame.

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:51 PM
I don't understand why the singer had a different tune to the band....

Oh lor... Wham!

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:53 PM
Russia: No ice-skater this year but - Oh Christ - a man with Rick Astley's hair who just asked the audience if they could feel his heartbeat! Someone call a musical doctor! Doctor Foxx should ensure this singer never makes it.

Working-the-camera fact: It's like he's singing just to me! Pass the bucket.

Verdict: Dire, but catchy chorus.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:54 PM
I don't understand why the singer had a different tune to the band....

Oh lor... Wham!

Yup, the 80s is back!

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:54 PM
He won the Russian X-Factor.

OOh this might be good.

HarryHoskins
05-14-2011, 11:57 PM
France: Thought Tourville and Dean were going to make an appearance at first - very Bolero. As it turns out it a fellow who needs a good shampoo. Singing in a language I don't understand but he looks very, very committed (either that or the stage fright has got to his bowels)

Lungs fact: The first man with a very large set of lungs.

mirandashell
05-14-2011, 11:58 PM
LOL!

He was singing in Corsican.

I did think it would get some votes. But no, it is France.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:01 AM
Italy: Liked the groove and then they went and spoiled it. Hoping they can pull it back. Not bad, but, c'mon Italy - this is a small and subtle song performed at Eurovision. The singer seems either to have sat on something sharp or thinks the occasional scream suits the song.

Piano Fact: First appearance of a see through piano.

Verdict: Not bad, but no chance.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:02 AM
LOL!

He was singing in Corsican.

I did think it would get some votes. But no, it is France.

Ah! Corsican! No wonder i couldn't make head nor tail of it. what a strange choice of language for the French.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:04 AM
I think it was meant to be Napoleonic in some way. So much so that France just declared war on Prussia...

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:05 AM
Lolorama :)

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:07 AM
Switzerland: Ukulele! Over-smiley double bass player. Singer puts the Russian singers working of the camera to shame. Quite a pleasant tune, rather like a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon. Perhaps not big enough to be a winner though.

Dark Horse Fact: The first country tipped as a Dark Horse.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:07 AM
Eng-er-land etc :)

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:08 AM
Oh dear. Us now. I'm going to hide behind the sofa......

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:11 AM
United Kingdom: Uh oh - The bad passport photo background was not a wise choice. Nice cheesy camera wink manouever pulled of without a hitch. Experience as a band is telling, they are definitely working the room well. Misjudged, Fugees-style three word rap. Nice blue suits. Groan.

Verdict: In with a chance?

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:12 AM
Nah. The sound quality was terrible. I don't know if it was the lead singer or his mike but he was barely audible.

Ooh! Magic gnomes!

I thought the nekkid pics of them were a bit dodgy, but I enjoyed the performance.

What on earth are the Moldovians wearing on their heads??!!

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:14 AM
Nah. The sound quality was terrible. I don't know if it was the lead singer or his mike but he was barely audible.

Yeah, they pulled it together by the end though. Magic gnomes is right on the money! :)

mirandashell

I actually liked that! The ska horns were good.

yes, I know. Someone slap me.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:15 AM
Moldova: Wardrobe by the Pet Shop Boys!!!! Red Hot Chilli Pepper influenced madness. Sort of like the Bosstones and Smashmouth. My personal fave so far. But I wouldn't advise Moldovans to hold their breath.

Pink tutu wearing unicyclist fact: Yes, you did just see that.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:15 AM
hi Netz!

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:18 AM
Germany: Can't take my eyes of the backing dancers, or should I say members of the German Luge team! Now, am I getting drunker or is this song actually quite good?

Verdict: Undecided, though erring on liking it.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:21 AM
I quite liked it! Could do without the luge team though...

Good lord! Phil Tufnell!

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:23 AM
Romania: Stripy trousers and the most Jolly piano player I have ever seen. A classic song, and when I say classic i mean it could've been entered into the competition in the 70s 80s or 90s. The piano player should've been the main event. His hair had a life of its own.

Choreography fact: Much use of the one/two arm forward and back finger click.

Hi, mirandashell

Ooh, just read HarryHoskins 9.18pm comment. Is this a drinking game thread??! Lol!

Hi Netz,

I think the drinking game is to drink enough to get through it. :)

On your marks, get set... Quaff!

I'm strictly on the water but I've just had a quaff, lol!

She's got very shiny hair, hasn't she?

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:27 AM
Austria: I'm a big fan of the Bob as a hairstyle and the Dylan as an artist. The Austrian entry has more of the former. Ohhh, she's giving it the arrrggghhh type vocal. Very 90s, very eurovision, very big song. Might do well.

Choir fact: Have choir, will wear black.

Netz
05-15-2011, 12:28 AM
20? She looked older.

I miss Terry's commentaries (always very entertaining) but Graham does a good job.

mirandashell

Yup, I miss Terry, too. He was The Don.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:32 AM
Azerbaijan: Any song that starts with Uh-oh-oh runs the risk of invoking a self fulling prophecy. Sounds quite current, who did it sound like though? - Take That maybe? Coldplay? Defo sounds like something.

Duet fact: Yes, they did they stoke face thing.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:33 AM
Sounded like something Annie Lennox would do. Only worse singing. AL could sing their asses off.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:35 AM
Slovenia: The singer's costumier seems unable to have gotten over the Slovenia/Xena rhyme, for this woman is decked out like a warrior princess. Nice wrist work, though.

Large mouth fact: The singer was considered as a candidate to open the Channel Tunnel.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:35 AM
What, by biting through the rock?

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:36 AM

Agreed. As much as AL got stick for always winning at the Brits, there was a reason - that woman can sing.

HarryHoskins
05-15-2011, 12:40 AM
Iceland: Very laid back, but then I suppose you would be what with all those months of darkness. Is it me or is the drummer sitting on a saddle? Waistcoats!

Interesting face alert! Six men and not a looker amongst them. More Picasso than Picturesque.

mirandashell
05-15-2011, 12:41 AM
I reckon it's got a chance though. Catchy song and a sad story.

HarryHoskins

HarryHoskins

Ukraine: Watch out! The singers epaulettes look like they might make a bid for freedom at any time! A lot of yeahs in this song, the sort of thing that goes down well, people love positivity.

Sand Sculpture fact: If the song bored you, you can look at the art instead.

Serbia: Vidal Sassoon lives! First foreign language song that has got this reporter grooving; though the quaffage rate has increased so I can never be sure. Tights!

Backing singer fact: The Serbian backing singers felt that by wearing these dresses they would receive good Karma for any future bridesmaid dresses they may have to wear.

I reckon Jedwood might do well, you know. At least they have the advantage that the majority of Europe doesn't know them as well as we do.

Missy Elliot fact - WTF is going on with the check suited man?

I had them down as possibles. Although I'd like them to win on ironic grounds I'm not sure I could stand the career CPR it would give them.
