I'm interested in finding a speaker who is either a self-pub/indie pub company rep or who has done a lot of successful self-publishing. It would be for next year's writers' workshop and it would be good if they are fairly local to the Pacific NW.

Can anyone recommend someone?

I've been following the stories of a few self-pubbed authors in Oregon but not sure how successful they are. From their FB and other postings, they are Rah! Rah! but ... ???

Probably the most famous one would be Dean Wesley Smith of Lincoln City, Or.

Or his wife, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, would be a popular draw. http://kriswrites.com/

I don't know if they do speaking engagements.

Tell Karl I sent you.

His forthcoming book is a tutorial on publishing your first book. Due out soon.

Also worth a call, Stephanie Chandler, www.stephaniechandler.com (http://www.stephaniechandler.com) .

Thanks for the ideas, Ken, but both of those people charge professional speaker fees which are beyond the budget of our small non-profit. Thanks for the tip, though!

Have you asked them? Don't assume anything without inquiring.

BTW, a small non-profit I am in had a conference last year, featuring nationally prominent speakers whose fee was $300 or less. And one of them never cashed the check. (Travel expenses were also reimbursed, though -- but still not huge.) Folks who have their own books or services to promote are not necessarily demanding speaking fees.
