Hello all,

My internet crapped out on my on the evening of 31st March, mere hours before the April Fools' Day festivities. I have only just got the fecker up and running again - two weeks without internet access. Yeah. You get a lot of work done. And you go sort of bat-shit. But you get a lot of work done.

Anyway, I was thankfully able to send Mac the Steampunk'd banner right before I was nut-kicked off the grid but I wasn't able to participate in the day and I haven't been able to thank everyone for their kind comments about the banner. It was all very much appreciated. I was also asked for a link to the banner so I've included one below.

Since I've started a thread to thank y'all, I figure it may as well be as good a place as any to share any stories, thoughts, whatevers about that day for miserable chuckleheads like me who missed out. I know there were a lot of amazing avatars too so feel free to post copies of yours in this thread for posterity. It will eventually be moved to the April Fool's Day forum for filing and as evidence in future lawsuits.

(But please, no hotlinking images. Use Photobucket, Flickr or an equivalent).

Thanks again!

And finally, as a special thank you, it's my pleasure to present Steampunk'd.... animated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUXyRTeAd2A)! (and in HD!)

Love the animation!

Loved April Fools day too - it was beautiful, and so much fun. I think I spent that whole day at AW..!

Thanks again :)

That is AWESOME!

And Steampunk'd was tons of fun! Lots of cool avatars (I'm still using mine). It was like a giant costume party. ;)

And the Writing for Kids gang decided to keep our Party Dirigible. :D

So sorry you weren't able to join in all the fun. We missed you!

Next year I expect Dragon's. Big, scary dragons that eat maidens and small children.

Or Steampunk 2, as Steampunk 1 was cool.

Dragons could be fun. ;)

What I'll remember most is the avatar madness. Everyone wanted new avatars. I spent like half my day changing avatars. The Fangsters have kept our steampunk avatars because they're awesome.

ETA: Oh my gosh! Love the animated version. Very, very cool.

The banner was so great!

I loved the theme this year. And all of the cool avatars. Very fun!

Mac made me a Super just before April 1st and I was so looking forward to being able to change avatars for people (whether they asked for it or not :D). Watch out next year, I'm warning you now.

The surprising thing to me was how you could pretty much type X + steampunk into Google Images and discover that someone, somewhere had made a picture of it already. I won't go into just how far I took that discovery, but it's certainly a heeeyowage world all by itself.

The font MacAllister and the mods switched us to was beautiful. I can't find that font anywhere.

Your banner was awesome!

I changed my note above my avatar to state I was an AW Flying Monkey (mod). One person fell for it!

Hmm... I don't know the name of the board font off-hand but I'm sure we can track it down. The banner font was the very neat and aptly-named After Disaster (http://www.dafont.com/after-disaster.font) font.

It was a great April Fool's Day and the banner was just full of awesome. :D

I've kept my avvie as well - Hugh gets me plenty o'reps. :D

Yeah, that was cool! I thought I'd come back and be the only one still wearing the avatar, but they're all over the joint. :)

It's beautiful. You're alright, you are.

I will try to overlook, though, Mr. Clockwork, that you did not give me a steampunk avatar. I see where I rate.

ETA - and sadly, I missed the whole thing. I was in New Orleans, eating bugs and being a bridesmaid for the first time in ages.

No, no, I wasn't here! I would have happily hacked your avatar, but I was in the barren wasteland of no-net.

That animation is outstanding, Chris!

Who did it for you?

I killed someone for George Lucas once and he owed me a favour. :)

Seeing as Clockwork missed out on the fruits of all his hard work, I think it's only fair that we Steampunk the place up again. :D

As I told you that day, I was seriously impressed. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give you a 10 for the banner (no joke).

Chris is one cool dude, isn't he?

I had lots of fun on April Fool's Day. I guess the joke was on Chris, missing out. :)

Loved the banner, too.

I loved the steampunk avatars, and copied a bunch of them to my computer. I have ... oh my, 90 of them in a folder that's 1.4 megabytes. Ouch.

Do you think you can use them? They are identified as avatars with numbers, but not the people whose avatars they are.

How do you use Photobucket or Flickr? Do you need an account? I assume what clockwork was saying is don't just post a link to the images, as per normal in signatures.

Not that I'd post 90 images anyway.

They are so gorgeous. People really got into the steampunk theme.

Photobucket allows you to register for free, then you upload your images to your "album". There's a choice of four codes beneath each picture once they're loaded, you copy/paste the one that says "IMG" (image) into the text box here on the board and the picture will appear.

Let's see, for posterity's sake:

Steampunk me (my AFD avi): http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x423/JosinLMcQuein/steampunk-1.jpg

The Steampunk Ipad: http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x423/JosinLMcQuein/ipad2.jpg

The movie Disney would make if they had any sense: http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x423/JosinLMcQuein/steampunkprincess-1.jpg

And the Home Computational Engine: http://i1181.photobucket.com/albums/x423/JosinLMcQuein/computationalengine4-1.jpg

I did a few avis for people, too, but I don't have all of them saved. :(

ETA: Next year should be Dystopias. The Absolute End of life as we know it.

Ouch? Back when computers were coal powered, 1.4 megabytes was a lot. Now it's like a single pixel in a highres Hubble image.

Be sure to get Plot Device to post here, that "It's the end of CHEAP steam" tagline has got to be the most classic take on Peak Steam.

Next year maybe we can have a post-Singularity party. We could even go into Second Life for nostalgia's sake, just like people now play 8-bit computer games.

And I see Perks already has an appropriate avatar. I'm keeping my Earth on you!

May I suggest that be called "Rule 3 + 4i":

If it exists, there IS a steampunk version of it.

1.4MB is actually amazingly small for 90 avatars! By comparison, the Steampunk'd banner (uncompressed) was about 2.97MB, and under 300KB as a JPEG. It was made up of 516 different files totaling 313MB. And the animated version of the Steampunk'd banner was made up of 2,802 files totaling 6.36GB!

But you could send me the avatars if you like, I might be able to put something together and post it here for posterity. They'd need to be put into one file like a zip or a rar file otherwise you'd have to attach 90 separate files to an email. Send them to skycoda [at] gmail [dot] com if you like.

As for Flickr/Photobucket, it's mostly to do with bandwidth and netiquette. If you hotlink to an image (the image appears on this site but is actually being fed from its original site) then the other site owner uses up his/her bandwidth every time the image is displayed here, which, with the number of members we have, can be the equivalent of a bandwidth black hole. By hotlinking you also have no control over that image. It could be removed or changed. But if you download the image from the site and then upload it to a Flickr or Photobucket account, then it's those guys using their bandwidth instead, which is fine because that's what those sites are for.

They're simple enough to use. You can sign into Flickr with a pre-existing Yahoo! or Google account, I believe.

May I suggest that be called "Rule 3 + 4i":

If it exists, there IS a steampunk version of it.

Good one! I believe there's a similar rule about porn but we won't go there... :)

Wait ... the banner was ANIMATED?!???

Shucks. None of my computers can take Flash -- I had no clue. Was it good?

It wasn't animated when it was a banner, someone did it after the fact.

Go back up the thread. Clockwork's got it posted as a Youtube vid. Yes, it's good.

Thanks, Cyia, but ...

Drattity drat drat drat! I STILL can't get Flash to work on my computers.

Most of the time I just shrug and live without video. But ...

Phooey.

D'oh! So I was going through some old files and I realised that I didn't follow through on my promise to put all the AW Steampunk'd avatars together in a file after Alessandra sent them to me. Sorry about that.

You can view the finished file here (http://chrishyde.tv/steampunkd%20avatar%20contact%20sheet.jpg). Right click on the picture, and choose Save As... to download it.

(couldn't label each avatar Yearbook-style, sadly, but I kind of like it without that anyway. maybe we can make a bingo game out of it? :) )

And thanks again to Alessandra for collecting them in the first place.
