I just about fell off my chair!!

Jenna, does this mean we can ORDER IT? What's the scoop?!

I can't believe you found that before Jenna had a chance to tell us!

Then again, maybe I'm NOT surprised. Hang in until Jenna makes things official, this could be LULU in the process of setting things up and it's not actually ready yet.

But I think we're going to hear a starting gun in the very near future....

Why is the ebook/download free?

That's one of the things that makes me think it's not ready yet.

Whoo-Hoo!!!! (does Snoopy dance of joy!)

I think it is Dave Perdew who says it is good policy to give away on internet sales. Lets see if I can remember more of his theory. That if you give something away you will draw more sales. He did it with his book "Bad Dad."
Oh help! I have no memory...

It is confusing, isn't it? The pricing looks off from screen to screen. So perhaps it isn't time for the media to see it yet.

Still, it allowed me to order 3 copies (for now) with a 4-8 business day express delivery and it allowed me to download and it sure looks pretty. It also says it could take a while to delivery b/c of

Okay, I sent Jenna a message telling her what Kim found. Hang tough, I'm sure she'll be by shortly to give us the scoop.

Hokay--I found the quotes I wanted.

"Include commentary from big name authors, pundits and industry proffessionals. Include the entire text, of not just the manifesto but the entire book. Make it easy to sent the book to a friend. Include an audio version of the book. Include my power point slides. All for free." Seth Godin "Unleashing the Idea Virus."

"By salting the field he creates a percieved need. As the perception spreads, it becaomes an ideavirus." Dave Perdew "60 Days to 100k."

That's why Dave gave away his book "Bad Dad" before he sold it. Like we would do to give free copies to book stores...

ChunkyC

I'm positive now that it's not ready for prime time. If you click the link that says 'various authors', you get a page where the pricing says $19.95 print, $5 download. So don't start spreading the news quite yet.

But it sure is fargin' cool seeing it there, ain't it?

First, I must agree with Chunky that it is nice to see it there. I may not get three copies in the next week but perhaps my order for three will be the first ones printed.

In regards to salting the field, I heard that some famous author did that with one of her books...she took a bunch and spread them out in various locations across the city....a table in a doctor's office, a shelf in an aisle at the grocery store, etc...through word of mouth, people started looking for the book and completely blew the publisher away b/c they hadn't promoted it, thinking it wouldn't be very popular.

Please JUST WAIT for Jenna. I know we're all excited and enthusiastic, but please wait for the official release notice. Lulu is in the process of formatting and finalizing the page/storefront/pricing, etc. The expected release date is November 1 -- to work out all the kinks. It'd be great if that date is pushed forward, but let's hear it from Jenna first, OK? I really don't feel good about us ordering it now... it may not be ready for prime time yet....

Also, I understand about giving something for free for promotion, advertising, etc. But at the same time, this is not for profit, but for charity, so I am weary about giving out the eBook version for free. Again, without Jenna's blessing, I don't know anyone is in the position to say anything.

Sorry for being a wet blanket...

That was quick. I just reloaded the page and now the e-book is $5.00 and the regular book is $19.95 (from 11.95 a minute ago)
They must barely be getting the kinks out of it.

That's going to be the page for review copies, I suspect. Whoever is in charge of that just needs to make it so it doesn't pop up on searches. The very nice back cover states the cover price is going to be $13.95 or 15.95 (I can't tell).

I would avoid ordering it if I were you because the book file attached to it may not be the correct one.

It looks the same as the 5 on the end so I expect it's going to be $15.95.

I think in regard to Lulu, the book should be removed until everything is final and makes sense. Being web accessible makes it just that.

Ok, Now this is totally freaky. Earlier I saw the price change (to 19.95) and now I go in and do a search and it is back down to $11.20 a book and free for the e-book again.

Why does it keep changing prices on me? I have only gone to one website.

JennaGlatzer

Page in process. Definitely not finished. They had to set up a page so I could work with it, but I have no idea why the pricing is jumping around or what's with the e-book. Please don't order yet. (If you already have, I'm sure they'll sort it out.)

It is neat to see it there, though. :)

They're sending me the book to proof right now. It's all formatted.

Sorry for being a wet blanket...

I just got back from a writer's retreat, so I didn't get a chance to respond sooner.

I don't think your post was a wet blanket in the least. I understand the waiting part. I actually ordered before I came onto AW, so if I get the wrong books or my order gets way-layed until 2007, I will fully understand and accept it as punishment for searching lulu out of boredom.

And in regards to being concerned over free downloads, I'm with you. I think that it is only available to people who have already ordered. The problem arises if that person doesn't think and buys one copy for him/her self and then passes it electronically to others, thereby making it unnecessary for the others to buy a copy. I am sure that Jenna will tweak that with lulul.

And I fully endorse the reminder not to mention to the media that the book may or may not be available. Without the press release in our hands, we should sit on them.

I just received my three copies. It is an amazing feeling to hold them in my hand.

Now, keeping in mind that my copies were the unfinalized proof--because of my acute lack of patience--but the price on the back of my copies shows a price without indicating the funds; US vs Cdn. It will be straightforward for those ordering right from the source at lovely Lulu, or ordering through bookstores that agree to carry the books, but if I buy a dozen copies to take to a writer's book fair at the end of November, I may have a hard time explaining the Canadian price to people... Any suggestions, Jenna?

Kim

ChunkyC
10-27-2005, 10:39 PM
I think just put a little sticker over the price with the CDN price, like you see sometimes in bookstores. If someone really wants proof, it'll be easy for them to go to Lulu and see that the price there matches what's printed on the cover, and that what you're asking in CDN funds is appropriate. You could even print out the Lulu page and have it handy for the persnickety types who think you're trying to use this charitable project to squeeze extra money out of them. Anyone who would think that would be a big weenie in my book, but if you're prepared for 'em, they'll back down I'm sure.

What did it come out to per book in Canadian funds before tax, if you don't mind me asking here?

Kim Gogo
10-27-2005, 11:19 PM
Well, unfortunately, I only know what it came to with the cost of shipping & handling, via express delivery, included in the total. I ordered three books and I contacted VISA earlier to confirm the final total amount. The cost transferred to Cdn funds by VISA on the date of purchase, would be based on the exchange rate at the end of business that day, I PRESUME.

It came to $100.33 Cdn for three books; so approx $33.44 per book.

The best thing to do is to urge people to buy it themselves, b/c, as Jenna said, the monies are the greatest for the charities when ordering directly from lulu.

The best thing for we Cdns would be to urge people to buy it directly from lulu. When we can't, ie for bookfairs, etc, we'll have to do as you suggested and calculate the cost. So if we buy '20' books to sell at book fairs, etc, we should take the total Cdn cost and divide by '20' and explain to the purchaser that the cost may differ depending on the exchange rate on the date of purchase, and have the paperwork available to show the true calculation to those who are persnickety.

Unless, anyone else has a better suggestion....? It'd be good to hear.

I think you have it in a nutshell: order by whatever method will get the books there in time, divide by the number of books and sell them at that price. Can't really do much more than that.

Thanks for sharing your data, Kim.

I'm going the route of handing out flyers, whenever they're ready. I'm just not in a position to buy books and resell. I'll be taking a stack with me to all my appearances.
